Dwarven Fortress, A game that has been around forever and has been around forever, has never been a more welcoming experience for the average and curious player. It’s what its developers ultimately decided to work on for the game’s upcoming Steam release.

Dwarf Fortress has the well-known title of being one of the most difficult games to learn. Even after changing all the silly keyboard commands and replacing the Matrix-like interface with plain and stunning pixel art, there’s still a lot going on. It still needs something. Something to alleviate the need to go directly to the wiki just to understand what’s going on. The answer, of course, is tutorials.
Zach shared some screenshots of the new The actual tutorial will show you the initial greeting and some basic guides like harvesting timber and stockpiling resources.
“To make the tutorials as rich as possible, we found the ultimate play tester: my wife, Annie,” says Zack. “There are enough base-building games out there right now to make Dwarf Fortress easy to get into. She doesn’t play any of them. After one failed attempt, the latest version of the tutorial got her good enough in the game to tunnel under the swamp and drown the fortress.”
The Adams brothers first started working on Dwarven Fortress 2002, why get down to this only now? Of course, a re-release of the game on Steam would expose the game to a potentially huge audience by dropping it on Valve’s shopfront (which also brings with it much improved visuals and more). Sounds like a good excuse, of course… for new curious players.
“Our goal is to make this level of play accessible to everyone,” wrote Zack. “I want the world to lose to this game and have fun playing it.”
Steam version Dwarven Fortress There’s no official release date yet, but fans digging into SteamDB believe it will release in early 2023.
