Since the Family Portraits series started five weeks ago, we are very pleased to showcase the work created by this amazing group of artists. These portraits show the key relationships underlying God of War Ragnarok.

But that’s not all!
You can’t finish the series without adding a special touch. Not only did we animate each piece, we hired Mimir to provide his keen insight into the subject matter of the portraits.
Drew Merritt – Bears and Wolves
Drew Merritt’s Kratos and Atreus, Bear and Wolf portraits capture the family relationships of our heroes. The father-son pair have endured many trials together in order to scatter the ashes of Faye (wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus) to the highest summit in all realms. After the events of God of War (2018), Kratos and Atreus become the close-knit family unit Faye has always wanted.
But Atreus is no longer a child in Ragnarok, God of War. Under his father’s watchful eye, he trained constantly and grew into a skilled fighter with the agility and smarts of a wolf. Atreus knows that some questions have answers that can only be reached outside the frozen homes of Midgard.
The snows of Fimbulwinter herald the arrival of Ragnarök and represent an increasing danger to all inhabitants of the Nine Realms. Kratos must prepare more than ever to fight and survive like Atreus was once taught. As vigilant as a bear that protects cubs, Kratos will do anything to keep his family safe.

Emma Rios – Dwarf
Emma Ríos’ dwarf portraits give us a glimpse of some new faces in addition to the familiar Huldra brothers Brok and Sindri.
Despite their past disagreements, Brock and Sindri have repaired not only their business relationship, but their brotherly bond. Skilled blacksmiths, they have provided much-needed gear improvements to Kratos and Atreus many times during their travels. Not without its quirks, Brok and Sindri’s unwavering support created a trust and dare I say a friendship between Kratos and his son.
Emma’s article also gives a glimpse into Svartalfheim, home of the Dwarves. Known for their superior engineering and craftsmanship, the inhabitants of this realm possess equal parts pride and skill.
Dwarves constructed vast structures such as mills, mines, and forges, and used their surroundings to craft the best tools, weapons, and armor across the nine realms.
We’ve introduced Darling and his squiggly little buddy Dinner before, but we’ll be a little later to introduce you to a mysterious new female friend, her super cute. very wrinkled dog.

Romina Tempest – Hero of Midgard
The arrival of Ragnarok may have prophesied an apocalypse, but that doesn’t mean our heroes can’t enjoy the quiet (ish) moments between battles.
Romina Tempest’s work depicts the unusual scene of a dinner with friends and family. When danger lurks around every corner, moments of laughter and comfort like these are the most precious and extraordinary.
The father-son relationship is central to our story, but Kratos and Atreus no longer fight only to keep each other safe. As the classic saying goes, a family can be a blue one, a dwarf, a head, a son, and a god of war (or two).

Jay Lee – mother and son
Jay Lee’s portrait depicts the goddess Freya holding the body of her lost child, Balder. In the events of God of War (2018), Freya was not only an ally of Kratos and Atreus, but ultimately a friend as well. She provided her guidance and mastery over her powerful Vanir magic, and it was thanks to her help that her father and son were able to complete their quests.
The end of the final game forced Kratos to choose: kill Balder and end the cycle of children killing their parents, or honor Freya’s wishes and take the life of the woman Balder saved his son from. Allow. Kratos is used to the pain of losing a child, but he couldn’t put aside Balder’s attempt to kill his mother.
Father and son saved Freya’s life, but at the cost of her friendship.
Although stripped of her wings and the title of Queen of the Valkyries by her ex-husband Odin, Freya’s anguish and anger made her a force to be reckoned with.

Sui Ishida – The Aesir
From the realm of Asgard, Odin and his family rule nine realms. Despite amassing his knowledge and power, the death of his son Balder and the arrival of Fimblewinter indicate that he was unable to prevent the initiation of his prophecy, which he had long sought to evade. . He does not want to tolerate such failures again.
Sui Ishida’s portrait depicts Odin in the background, covered and protected by his family’s warriors who stand between him and those who challenge their cause.
There are some faces we haven’t met yet, but there are some Aesirs that Kratos and Atreus have already fought on their way to Jotunheim. His father-son pair eventually killed Magni and Modi, sons of Balder and Thor. These acts not only drew blood from the most powerful families in the Nine Realms, but also removed a significant portion from the board that acted as an extension of the All-Father’s Will.
Despite these losses, Odin’s most powerful pieces continue to flourish. This is Thor, the fiercest warrior in all of Asgard. Wielding the legendary weapon Mjolnir, the god of thunder’s notoriety is matched only by the brutal power he wields against those who oppose his family.
With Ragnarok on the horizon, Aesir gears up for war, and the lives Kratos and Atreus took years ago may cost even more.
