Brick breakers have been a staple of the game since the early days, and the formula has changed very little since then. A wall of colorful bricks will appear and it’s up to you to guide the ball into each block and destroy them until the level is cleared. But what if the developer decides that’s not enough?
Shatter was originally released in 2009, but a mobile update is coming to consoles as Shatter Remastered Deluxe earlier this year. Just like the original, we’re not satisfied with just providing the usual brick-breaking experience.
There are many game modes such as Time Attack, Boss Rush, and Endless. Many also have co-op features, but let’s focus on the story mode with over 70 levels. Things usually start well with classic-style breakout levels, but as you progress, the types of blocks you encounter rapidly increase. Some double when hit, some are immune to lasers, and some rapidly change the direction of the ball’s movement. The list goes on and on.
Additionally, the actual shape of the level also begins to change. Some have rounded fields that lend themselves to games like Tempest, while others are still horizontal. Even if in the middle of the story it feels like some of the same level types keep being recycled. But in the end the game offers a truly fresh approach to the genre. This is as obvious as a boss fight. These encounters require a unique approach and the use of one of the game’s most interesting features: suck and blow.
Your machine has the ability to suck in and blow away tiles and objects in the world. This is an interesting feature for Brick Breaker, and it causes utter chaos. If you don’t use your powers carefully, you can basically pull in the entire map at once. It’s complete madness and it’s Amazing.
All of these unique ideas are presented with updated graphics, performance, and music to give you one of the best brick-busting experiences ever. Between the amazing amount of content and the willingness to try new things and be creative, if you like brickbreakers, this is not to be missed.
