Togges (rhymes with Bogey) is an imaginative puzzle-platformer with a fresh approach to movement. The creatures in the title are cute cubes that can be spawned from certain points in the game’s rather large hub world. You must lead the trail to your destination.
By holding R2 you can continuously create a stream of Togges while moving, but you can watch them stack and reach higher areas while standing still. Different colored togs have their own characteristics. Red ones can carry fire, yellow ones conduct electricity. Use these abilities and keep in mind that small cube characters have a limited supply, reach for collectibles and find all the fruits. This is what you need to proceed.
The stages are large and freely configurable, so you can explore them as you wish. Being able to start spawning Togges only at set checkpoints somewhat goes against this spirit, but the bigger problem is that the creature doesn’t lend itself to smooth movement. Navigating them while doing can be a daunting exercise. It’s all part puzzle-solving, but it doesn’t feel particularly intuitive.
The levels are at least creative, allowing you to explore unique environments like a medieval castle on a crescent moon or a sprawling town on carrot cake. There are also more linear stages to find and small islands you can fly off. super mario galaxy-style. Despite some odd choices in its design, Togges mostly charms us with its experimental spin on platforming and no small amount of whimsy.
