The whole point of the Game of the Year Awards is to assume that we are all adults and have plenty of free time to catch up with the ever-growing number of game releases. You would think that gaming journalists pay more attention to this than most journalists of all types of adults…and you would be wrong! We get lost, sidetracked, put off, backlogged, and instead of checking out, we spend hours playing this hot new thing called Skyrim. elden ring.
If you’re familiar with our semi-regular Backlog Club series, you know we’ve spent a good chunk of this year on games outside of 2022. So, in honor of the game that dominated 2022 but didn’t qualify for his GOTY this year, here’s a game with a terrifying title. “Best Switch game other than 2022 that I’ve played a lot” 2022 Game of Knot Year Awards. let’s go!

Winner: Metroid Dread
Realistically, my answer to this is Metroid Dread. This is a small indie game you’ve never heard of. Of course you’ve heard of it. everyone has it. I was very late to this party and this year he had just gotten his Dread in November, soHave you ever played Breath of the Wild? It’s really good! So, before I talk about anything else, let me quickly wrap up: A great game, one of the best on Switch, the best Metroid of all time?
If you disqualify Dredd based on the fact that of course very nice, then I’d have to go to Owlboy instead. It’s just beyond me that I’ve never played this before! It had everything I wanted in a video game. Stunning art style, interesting combat system, and the man in the green hat. If I could have made it last longer I would have done so sooner, but the few nights I spent playing this title were some of my best gaming memories of the year. Maybe not. best game on switchbut I know which one made me cry more…

Winner: Defeat the Spire
My GOTY this year is metal gear solid v, a game I resolutely ignored when it came out, for its legitimately atrocious way of treating women (or “women,” because there really is only one, “women”). But god, it’s all just as gorgeous little things—a masterpiece of ‘can this work’ system design. Shame about sexism.
However, if we’re talking Switch games, my GOTY outside of 2022 is easily Slay the Spire. I played it on Steam when it first came out, many Back then, however, getting it on the Switch easily tripled my time in the game. That’s a good thing, but I love being able to rediscover games like that.

Winner: Spelunky
Earlier this year, I was perusing the Switch menu, deciding to check something off my backlog to make me feel better. A simple one that can be completed in a few hours, just to activate the squirt.
Foolishly I saw Spelunky sitting there and tapped it. He’s enjoyed quite a few roguelites, so he figured it was time to go back to what sparked the indie developer’s love of the genre a decade ago. it’s good. It’s really good. You already know that, but if you’ve somehow overlooked it over the past decade like I did, then I can confirm that Derek Yu’s video game Spelunky is an excellent video game. i haven’t finished it yet. Spelunky 2 awaits me when it’s finished.by the time it ends That I could have checked 12 other games from my backlog, but none of them made it to Spelunky.
So first thing, right?Perhaps Yu will wrap development ufo 50 By the time I get over them!

Winner: Unpacking
It feels like a cheat to put a game here that came out in the last few months of 2021, but I wish I had played Unpacking when it first came out.
In fact, real unpacking is stressful. One moment you’re packing your life into a perishable cardboard box, the next you’re trying to find a new place in a brand new shell. Maintain introspection. This is a game that could tell a story without words. For 10 hours, I carefully unpacked, filled the shelves, and examined the rooms, paying attention to changes in the type of house and items: what was missing, what was left, and my mood. rice field. It’s a beautiful game, and it gives me a little hope and positivity for my next life-changing move.
