On the surface, Inscryption is like any other deck builder. But there’s more going on in this game than meets the eye. A spooky card game ends with “What happened?”
This review will be spoiler-free as there are parts of the story that you need to experience. Dropped into the game without much explanation. You are trapped in a shack and find yourself playing a card game with a stranger shrouded in darkness, only his eyes showing through. After a brief introduction to how the card game works, we play a few rounds. The game is very easy. Various creatures make up your hand. Some are sacrifice cards. That is, play them and get killed by other cards. Some cards are even stronger. Cards that deal damage have a blood or bone cost, and you must sacrifice the number of creatures indicated by the blood or bone cost.
Strategy is a big part of the game as you learn that the playing field is a bit like a chessboard. Some animals you play with can do more damage than others, and others can take advantage of their special attacks. Win a round by dealing a certain amount of damage to your opponent. Enemy cards and obstacles block damage dealt by cards. Damage dealt is represented by teeth on the scale. If the scale tilts in your favor, you win. If not, I’ll explain later.
If you read the last paragraph and had to look twice, you are not alone. The point system is indeed teeth, and what’s even stranger is that you can pull them out to offset the scale. , you hear a crunching sound. And honestly, it’s mild compared to how dark this game gets. It gives you clues on how to beat your opponent and where and how to get extra cards. This is where you find opportunities to acquire other cards to add to your deck by unlocking puzzles from the clues the cards provide.
If you lose twice during the game, a stranger will reach out from the shadows, grab you and throw you into the room. Before he kills you, he takes a picture of you and turns it into a card that can be used in his next game session. This is an interesting way to build your deck as you can control the attributes added to your cards. You can also name the card.
After defeating the boss, the story takes a twist. Unlock several different video clips and discover the real story behind Inscryption. As I said, no spoilers, but the next section is a top-down RPG-style card game. It’s a game within a game. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock more video clips that reveal the true charm of the game, the horror story underlying the gameplay.
If I had one complaint, it would be that the pacing could have been a little faster. I died a lot and starting over was frustrating.Mistakes cost money, but affect the overall intense feel of the game
