AMD has announced its new Ryzen 7045 mobile CPU family. Codenamed Dragon Range, AMD’s new flagship chip for high performance laptops scaled to 16 cores.
Basically a repackaged version of the Ryzen 7000 series (opens in new tab) As already seen on the desktop, it’s complete with Zen 4 architecture and chiplet engineering with I/O dies and up to two CPU core dies.
Just like the desktop Ryzen 7000, the I/O die also has the same tiny 2CU RDNA 2 graphics cores. Of course, its graphics aren’t for gaming. For that, AMD has the RDNA 3, also known as the new Radeon RX 7000 mobile chip. (opens in new tab).
Coming back to mobile CPUs, this new chip family hits 5.4 GHz with the full 16 core monster Ryzen 9 7945HX. AMD touts his 7045 series as the “ultimate mobile gaming platform”, offering “a new frontier of performance for mobile creators”.
The focus of the new 7045 series on pure performance over efficiency and battery life is underscored by the memory support offered. It is limited to DDR5 and does not support the more efficient LPDDR5. Don’t expect your Ryzen 7045 series laptop’s battery life to last all day.
According to AMD, the new Ryzen 9 7945HX is up to 18% faster than the old Ryzen 9 6900HX in single-threaded workloads and 78% faster in multi-threaded tasks. The big leap in multi-threaded software is clearly due to the core count leap from the Ryzen 9 6900HX’s 8 cores.
As for gaming, AMD believes the new chip will be 29% to 62% faster compared to the Ryzen 9 6900HX, which is pretty spectacular if accurate.
AMD has announced four variants of its new processor. Along with the 16-core 5.4GHz Ryzen 9 7945HX, there’s also a 12-core 5.2GHz Ryzen 9 7845HX, an 8-core 5.1GHz Ryzen 7 7745HX and a 6-core 5GHz Ryzen 5 7545HX.
Early adopters of the Ryzen 7045 Mobile include the new Alienware M16 and M18. (opens in new tab), Asus Strix and Lenovo Legion. It’s worth noting how much traction AMD has over notebook makers these days.
If Intel dominated the market and AMD only got a handful of laptop designs, we would expect to see many systems offering these new CPUs, including all the big brands.
AMD has not announced pricing. Either way, mobile CPUs tend to be purchased with laptops, not separately. However, AMD has said that the first laptops with this chip will ship in his February.
