Whether you’re an existing fan or brand new to the world, Dragon BallDragon Ball Z: Kakarot remains a relatively accessible retelling of Akira Toriyama’s timeless series. It’s an almost exact adaptation of the material, hitting every major story beat and fleshing it out with some great cutscenes.
However, the game’s presentation can be a little bland. The fully animated cinematics I mentioned earlier are spectacular, but are often sandwiched between awkwardly static dialogue scenes. It’s likely going to take 40 hours or so, and obviously corners need to be cut to make sure all the major plot points are covered.
But if you can get past the inconsistent quality, Goku’s adventures have a lot to offer.At a basic level, it’s just a matter of flying and exploring of dragon ball A colorful world is fun. Take on side quests, interact with all kinds of characters, and defeat optional bosses for a fun diversion outside of the main mission.
Of course, combat is an important part of the experience. The system is easy to grasp, but there’s enough depth to have to discover how to weave super moves into combos and learn your opponent’s attack patterns.Repetition kicks in later — especially when you’re grinding through the basic enemy encounters dotted around the map — but the game manages to capture speed, impact, and awe. dragon ball z trademark action.
And there’s no question that all play best on PS5. This current-generation port offers a 60 frames per second performance mode, bringing welcome fluidity to combat. More frames means more responsive controls. This is a huge improvement considering how quick combat can be. The graphical upgrades are also decent, with enhanced character models, environmental details, and lightning effects that make for a very beautiful game at times (if you can overlook the distracting muddy textures).
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is accessible anime fun. It’s easy to argue that this is still the best retelling dragon ball z It’s a video game story, simplistic and a bit rough around the edges, but the gameplay ultimately hits the spot.
