We’re used to finding glitches in games pretty early in our playtime (the first week of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet flooded our Twitter feeds). One such example catches our attention today and, predictably, it has to do with Super Mario Sunshine.
Anyone who’s ever played Sunshine has run into a strange glitch or two. Perhaps we’ve seen Mario fall off the floor and plummet to his death, or we’ve seen him walk in and out of walls like Marvel’s Nightcrawler. Fortunately, most of these are on the “very nasty” end of the glitch spectrum. The other end is reserved for things like the Gelato Beach soft-rock glitch recently demonstrated by a YouTuber. reinventing the game.
As the name suggests, this is a soft rock glitch that occurs in the game World 3: Gelato Beach. Unique to the Italian version of the game, simply reading the sign in front of the shack in Mission 8, “Watermelon Festival” triggers the end-game softlock. When he reads this symbol, instead of the normal textbox he will see two textboxes. When a second empty box appears on the screen, the game locks down and the only way out is to reset the console (who said reading is good for you?).
This glitch is so slippery that it’s managed to sneak under the radar for the past 20 years, even making its way into the Italian version of 2020’s Super Mario 3D All-Stars. If you’ve found an Italian copy of the game and want to see the glitches in action, Gaming Reinvented has got you covered and made a video to show you what it’s all about. No do. You can check it below.
Whether or not Mario Sunshine will be re-released remains to be seen (and if so, it certainly needs a good revamp), but discoveries like this show that we still need to stay vigilant when playing. It looks like there are still a lot of bugs.
