Knock down trees, grab stones, gather whatever plant fiber you have, and quickly build an axe. 2023 is shaping up to be a very strong year for new survival games. You’ll need something sharp to cut through them.
2022 has been a bit of a disappointing year when it comes to new survival games, so it looks like 2022 will be a promising year for the survival genre. There have been a few gems scattered throughout the year, especially in early access, like the vampire survival game V Rising. (opens in new tab)Colony Builder Stranded: Alien Dawn (opens in new tab)and survival city builder Farthest Frontier (opens in new tab). and the Dwarven Fortress (opens in new tab)‘s Steam release has finally wrapped up the year.
For the most part, though, 2022 felt lighter than recent years for new survival games. This is mostly because some big games have missed their release dates and slipped into his 2023.
But forget the past and look to the future. As we enter the new year, we are sharpening our core for the coming months. Here are 12 survival games to expect in 2023.
Frostpunk 2

Originally planned for 2012, the open world survival FPS was later canceled, but was relaunched in 2018 when developer GSC Game World regrouped. I completely understand the recent delays. The developer was in Kyiv and had to relocate to Prague due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We’re hoping Stalker 2 will make it in time for its late 2023 release date.
Ark 2
Are you ready for Dinosaurs and Diesel? Sons of the Forest
Fans of the gruesome horror-survival game The Forest may not have much time to wait for a sequel. This time they are searching a remote island for the missing millionaire, but things are expected to go awry quickly and they will be forced to carve up. Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
The first survival game set in Tolkien’s universe (opens in new tab) It takes you deep into the ruins of Khazad Dum, a former Dwarven kingdom from the 4th Age of Middle-earth. Play solo or co-op to mine mithril and other minerals, build bases, fight orcs and goblins (or worse), and craft weapons and machinery deep in the mountains.
Pacific Drive
It’s always nice when a survival game moves into a completely different genre. Pacific Drive (opens in new tab) is a first-person ‘driving survival game’ where your car is your only companion as you zip through the dangerous and deadly ‘no-go zones’ of the Pacific Northwest. Discover new sci-fi parts to spice up your ride as you drive through an ever-changing landscape filled with deadly storms, toxic clouds, monsters and mutants, and violent rocky upheavals. Along the way, try to unravel the mysteries of the Weird Zone. The developer, his Ironwood Studios, calls it “like the road,” which sounds pretty cool to me.

In all honesty, we call it “Pokémon with guns” because it looks just like that. A bright fantasy world. pal world It’s weird, but I can’t say I’m not interested in playing it. Farm for food, survive the harsh weather, and gather an army of creatures to fight alongside you. (If you die, you can always eat it.)
nightingale
Like many games in 2022, nightingale Early Access release slipped into 2023. Set in the Victorian era, this survival crafting game puts you stranded in a strange realm filled with monsters and magic, where you can build mansions, craft weapons and gear. You can open portals to other realms containing valuable resources, and interestingly, fighting isn’t the only way to deal with enemies. Sometimes you can negotiate a truce with certain factions like the Titans to avoid having shotgun blasts solve all your problems.

I had to put an asterisk on this because it’s a huge wildcard. On the strength of some long trailers with some heavy DayZ and The Division vibes, the day before It rose to the top of the most wishlisted games on Steam.But after not hearing anything new about it for several years, things suddenly got weird.It’s been removed from Steam. (opens in new tab) Because the developer says it’s a trademark dispute (opens in new tab), it has been delayed for eight months until November, with a promised new gameplay video currently pending. We’re not quite sure what’s going on with The Day Before, and we’re pretty sure there’s more to the story, but at this point, it’s hard to believe that it will actually come out in 2023.
