Micah and the Witch’s Mountain (opens in new tab) It has an instantly eye-catching look, an aesthetic, and a really lab-grown premise that immediately pierces the nostalgia cortex of your average millennial lizard brain. Kiki’s Delivery Service (opens in new tab)together to melt your heart, at least in 3D platformer format.
You play the role of a little chibi witch named Mika. Mika comes to a faraway island to apprentice to the Elder Witch. That elder witch turns out to be a jerk of sorts and she kicks you back all the way down the mountain.
To that end, Mika takes on delivery jobs, hoping to gradually buy better brooms and earn enough Scratch to get closer to the top of the mountain. The game demo contains only a simple quest sequence and is confined to a small part of the island, but how developer Abraham Cozar uses these mechanics to create a diverse and exciting platformer. You already know you can do it.
In one of the demo deliveries, a fisherman takes a packed lunch, but when it falls into the water on the way, it becomes soggy and the delivery fails. Mika must fly off the wharf and land accurately on the fisherman’s boat. It’s a pretty fun and exciting platforming challenge that makes good use of Mika’s unique flying broom mechanic.
On your next delivery, you’ll have to scoop fish out of the ocean, deliver them to a kind old man, send them to the aquarium, fly low over the water to catch your prize, and then return to your client. And then the demo ends—it’s pretty light, but it pitches the game overall well. The game itself can maintain a steady 30 or 40 fps. The game is also targeting a Switch release, so the deck’s playable status seems like a pretty solid bet.
“Mika and the Witch’s Mountain” is currently airing kick starter (opens in new tab) Exceeding its original goal of $40,000, it’s over $225,000 at the time of writing — Cozar has already come up with some new stretch goals! can be added to your wishlist vapor (opens in new tab)and check out the demo for yourself at Steam Next Fest starting tomorrow.
