Amidst the noise of Steam Next Fest (opens in new tab) And some kind of big wizard game (opens in new tab) Coming this week, a highly engaging indie RPG has landed on Steam. Ferbidek (opens in new tab) (sometimes styled as Felvidék) is a low-fantasy turn-based game created with the venerable RPG Maker toolset, with a stunning aesthetic all its own.

“Like Baldur’s Gate on the Gameboy” is the punchiest elevator pitch I can think of. Solo developer Jozef Pavelka recreates the classic style of pre-rendered 3D backgrounds commonly found in his late 90s RPGs, but in this stark monochrome, all in muted grays, greens and browns. Applying his wash takes it a step further.The contrast between high-fidelity art and lack of color recalls Lucas Pope’s The Return of Obra Ding (opens in new tab), or, as highfalutin as this may sound, it’s a gothic view of the original Nosferatu silent film. I’m an absolute sucker for this kind render core Especially when developers can create their own and offer a very unique interpretation of the style. Gameplay-wise, Felvidek is reminiscent of classic Dragon Quest and Ultima. Fellow trains wander the exploration screen, zooming into a first-person view of enemies lined up for combat. New Blood’s upcoming Fallout-inspired CRPG (opens in new tab) A similar split is made for exploration and combat.
Felvidek looks like a more grounded, low-key kind of low-fantasy, but the first trailer and screenshots give us a glimpse of the more fantastical elements. I also like Felvidek’s cheeky first-person combat animations.
