the valve is blog post (opens in new tab) Team Fortress 2 will get a “major update” this summer. So, not just the usual infusion of new cosmetic items, but “items, maps, taunts, anomalous effects, war paints, and who else knows?”
The only catch is that the community has to provide everything. Valve calls for submissions to the Steam Workshop by May 1st for this “no name, no theme yet, but a very exciting summer.” (Unless you want to develop something summer-themed) Update.”
As an overview, Team Fortress 2’s last major update was Scream Fortress 14 last October. If that doesn’t sound too bad, I’d like to note that TF2’s last non-Scream Fortress major update came in 2017 with Jungle His Inferno. This also appears to have been the last time TF2 received new content created in-house by Valve using Control Point his map Mercenary Park. Otherwise, all “major” updates are Steam Workshop driven.
The growing love and attention for TF2 over the past year, especially in the fan campaign (opens in new tab) It’s great to see that community rewarded with additional updates to get more developer-side support for the game from Valve. The creation of has been praised and profiled by Valve.
The news also follows Valve, which effectively gives the community the keys to the kingdom (opens in new tab), giving modders a lot of freedom when modifying the game using VScript. It will be exciting to see how the mod community responds to Valve’s requests for submissions, and whether developers can create a cohesive theme for the event out of all these different projects.
