They weren’t headline news, but Sony You’ve done a pretty good job throughout the life of the PlayStation 4 releasing custom consoles. You know the drill: It’s inside a regular PlayStation 4, but the case gets a new color or has a fancy faceplate with the game’s logos and art on it.
Aside from swappable color panels, Sony doesn’t seem all that interested in the PlayStation 5 idea, making the announcement of this new LeBron James-themed console very odd.
First of all, this isn’t even a PlayStation video game. Or video games at all. This is the console associated with LeBron James. Manwhich is synonymous with many things, none of them are video games.
And second, it looks like shit! It looks just like the LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE stencil on your friend’s mom’s kitchen wall. It looks like box art from a toddler color marker set. And besides Nike marketers, who else would admit to being associated with LeBron?

Most people who walk into a house and see this will think, “Why did I buy a PlayStation 5 case on Etsy?” The owner should give an explanation for it. Oh, this is the LeBron James PS5, as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer himself described it.
It still drives me crazy to think that an Akron kid who grew up on the game would end up creating something like this. Designing a console cover and a PlayStation controller in honor of the students of I Promise and where we are from is absolutely incredible. We hope it will continue to inspire everyone it touches and inspire them to find meaning in the details.
ok i feel a bit That’s because it’s really great for the kids at I Promise, a school funded by the Foundation for NBA Megastars and located in James’ hometown of Akron.
But just a little! For everyone else, this still looks bad. And it may just be a small part of what’s to come. At the bottom of Sony’s announcement It was rumored that this was just the first release in a series of works designed with “creators, athletes, actors, artists, gamers and entertainers.”
This is just the beginning of PlayStation Playmaker. We look forward to spotlighting more stories from this dynamic and evolving network of talent passionate about sharing their love of PlayStation and video games with the world. They represent today’s most exciting creators, athletes, actors, artists, gamers and entertainers. PlayStation Playmaker is part of our journey to inspire gamers and prove the power of play.
If you’re interested in this LeBron console, it’s set to launch later this year, but it looks like you’ll only be able to get it directly from Sony.
