Planet Cube: Edge is a platformer for Nintendo Switch. That simple statement belies what lies beneath the surface: a challenging and addictive title that should leave fans of the genre scratching the itch.

The premise is simple. The invasion of the peaceful planet Cube leads our hero Edge into an adventure trying to save his fellow Cubeoids and the planet. As Edge navigates a variety of environments, from labs to subways, he faces off against a myriad of formidable foes.

The gameplay is nothing short of addictive. If you’re a platforming aficionado, this is likely to put an ear-to-ear grin on your face. will be released. You can equip useful items like blasters and jetpacks right away. Blasters not only help eliminate enemies, but also present puzzles with shootable locks that open new paths. . Think Spike. lots of spikes. For some reason, Planet Cube is littered with these deadly objects.

What this means is a very rewarding outing. Death awaits you at almost every turn. Once you get used to Planet Cube’s dynamics quickly, the difficulty is obvious from the start. Sure, it has the usual run, jump, and shoot mechanics, but the traps and enemies offer a very fresh variety and feel great to play. Even if you die a lot. There are always things to watch out for, such as turrets that hit with lasers, mines that explode in seconds when touched, and blades that change speed depending on whether they are on the ground.

Thankfully, one hit kills the little cube avatar, but it respawns right next door. This makes it very easy to play over and over (and over again) until you overcome those tricky sections. And when you conquer them, it’s very satisfying!

There are also optional objects to collect along the way. These add another layer of complexity through some very difficult areas. You can skip them and come back if you want to add more life to the game. It’s a sense of accomplishment. It’s like nothing can stop you.

There’s a fine line between being difficult and being frustrating, but the team did a great job balancing this feeling. increase. Casual gamers, on the other hand, can be outraged. There is no setting to choose difficulty, but I can see why not. It’s not the number of enemies or amount of lives that helps, it’s the perils of the platforming itself.

Planet Cube: Edge - Nintendo Switch - Screen 3

There are also achievements, which provide another incentive to keep playing. These humorous extras will appear on your screen once you unlock them. For example, I died multiple times while attempting the same jump. This gave us the result of “not learning the first time”. Trying the same thing and expecting different results may be the definition of crazy. I prefer not to give up easily.

The Planet Cube also stands out visually. It’s based on a great retro aesthetic with a grayscale 16-bit look layered with blue tones. It looks great, with the story and the stunning 90s cutscenes that introduce each chapter. Even Edge himself makes a cute “boing” sound when jumping. It’s very well designed.

Overall, Planet Cube: Edge is more than just a platformer. This is pure joy for fans of the genre, offering addictive fun to play in a challenging world. Despite the simple graphics, this is a great game full of tricks. Don’t let the cube hero’s cuteness fool you. This is a tough title that will appeal to those who want to stay busy for quite some time.
