When I last spoke with Turn and Zach Adams, the Dwarf Fortress brothers and co-creators were racking their brains over the new reality of becoming a millionaire. It hasn’t been long, but when I sat down with my brothers at the 2023 Game Developers Conference this week, I needed to know.
“I was going to buy a guitar,” Turn said. “We went to Guitar Center. They had one I tried, but it didn’t speak to me. Alas.”
That guitar trip was a rare downtime for Adams in recent months. Their 2023 was a whirlwind. Along with his Kitfox at the publisher, he hired a programmer from the modding community to work on the game full-time and source his 20-year history of Dwarf Fortress to make his code accessible to anyone else. They released patch after patch fixing minor issues with the Steam release and the addition of Arena mode. After surviving on donations for a long time, they started doing a few things for themselves.
But I wanted to know more about that guitar. After selling hundreds of thousands of copies of Dwarf Fortress, Tarn’s one waste of money was largelybut actually buy a guitar?
Turns out there was a story there.
“I’m kind of spoiled by the experience of pulling this flamenco guitar off the wall in 2005, well beyond my price range at the time. oh“I can really understand why some people want a wooden guitar instead of plastic,” said Turn.
But with the crowdsourcing power of the internet, you can find the exact guitar the creators of Dwarf Fortress dreamed of, right?
I asked in detail.
“Spruce flamenco guitar. How would you describe the action? It has to be easy to play. It really spoiled me. By the way, it’s a lot easier to play, and you can do a lot more without thinking about it. It is not necessary to press deeply.
“Those who know [guitars] Hit me more than me,” he said with a laugh.
