HBO is in the early stages of developing a new Game of Thrones prequel series about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. variety was first reported, citing an unnamed source.
The show follows Aegon and his sister’s wives Vicenya and Renis as they use dragons and armies to conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, excluding Dorne. He became king, sat on the Iron Throne, and founded the Targaryen dynasty. These events took place about 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
No writers have been assigned to the project yet, but sources say HBO is eager to move forward and has already started searching for writers. Additionally, although plans are still being finalized, the project may include a feature film component leading to a series.
The project will be the latest in a string of Westeros-based projects on HBO, following the success of Game of Thrones. The only other project to move forward is House of the Dragons, which will premiere in the series in August 2022 and has already been renewed for season two. Discontinued in 2019.
According to a report in late March, HBO may be aiming to make House of the Dragon’s second season shorter than the first season’s 10 episodes. It reportedly fits the series’ overall vision, and the show’s creative team is supposedly already planning a third season.
