If you’re unfamiliar with Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, let’s paint a picture. Welcome to Kamena: A small coastal town currently experiencing unnatural electromagnetic interference that interferes with electrical and wireless equipment. TV turns on and off. Airplanes lose radar. Radio stations cannot broadcast through static electricity. You know, it’s a problem that every quaint town in the Pacific Northwest has to deal with.
Enter Riley Poberly, an environmental researcher who reluctantly returns to her hometown to investigate these frequency signals and finally takes on more than she bargained for. As Riley, you will brave rugged terrain, encounter mysterious cults, and discover strange supernatural phenomena that threaten to change the world as we know it. How you face these challenges is up to you. Your choices will shape Riley’s future, and Kamena’s very destiny.
You need the right gear to take on the task at hand. Riley’s backpack has just that. A radio tuned to a supernatural frequency. To understand more about these radio frequencies, Riley needs to place transmitters all over Kamena. Climbing kit for traversing Kamena’s more dangerous terrain. and a walkie-talkie that allows Riley to communicate with some new characters along the way.

Those who have played Oxenfree will be familiar with its dialogue system and unique radio mechanics that allow the first game’s protagonist, Alex, to communicate with a mysterious ghost and manipulate her world. With Oxenfree II, we wanted to evolve that idea. This new walkie-talkie feature gives players control over when and how Riley converses with off-screen characters.
So how does it work? Let’s say you set up a transmitter at Tootega Falls and then trek back. Jacob, your high school friend and business partner, doesn’t talk much. He can use his left trigger at any time to open the walkie-talkie. Browse channels until you find someone you want to talk to.
To answer or not to answer, that is the question
In Oxenfree II, players shape the story through Riley’s behavioral and dialogue choices, much like Alex and the characters did in the first game. Each decision will affect who Riley becomes, his relationships with other characters, and the story options available each time.

Transceivers extend this and open up a layer of player agency. Depending on how you interact with people on your walkie-talkie, you can progress the story as you see fit. Unlike the first game where you were faced with a choice of interacting with the people in front of you, you always have the option to initiate a conversation with your walkie-talkie contact. These interactions can reveal useful insights into Camena’s mysteries.
Or you can ignore them completely. If you go that route, it will have its consequences – but that’s your decision.
who is there?
In addition to some of the characters you’ll encounter, like Jacob and members of the cult group Parentage (more on that another time), walkie-talkies introduce more local contacts . If you get stuck in the middle of the game, you can pull out your walkie-talkie and touch the base with one of his contacts.
We learn not only about Kamena, but also about the personal crisis they are currently facing.
One of those characters is Maria, a DJ at a Camena High student-run radio station. Listen to her radio show, where she offers advice to listeners on Channel 8. She may ask you for advice if you choose to contact her, which may change the type of music you listen to on Camena High Radio.
Another character you come into contact with (or rather, he contacts you) is Nick, a sailor who, in his own words, “has traveled up and down the coastline.” Give Nick a little help and he’ll provide valuable insight into the strange happenings around Kamena. You may need to help him as he grapples with his own supernatural situation.
