As a barista who prepares coffee and other warming beverages, we listen and help our customers. So how does Coffee Talk make listening interesting?
chatted with hibiscus & butterflyJunkipatchi (narrative designer and lead writer) and Anna Winterstein (writer) on how to maintain the right atmosphere and experience in a game where listening is so important, and their own challenges as new writers for the series I will tell you.
conversation in coffee shop
“The script is one of the most important aspects after atmosphere (visuals, music) and is how the player interacts with the character. I will open the and gently urge you.” Junki said.
Real-life experiences can also be inspiration, says Junki.
“People’s communication styles vary from place to place, so experience of real-life conversations with strangers can be helpful. Coffee shops and bars often serve as a person’s ‘third place. There you can relax or be cautious, depending on your personality. This can lead to interesting dynamics…” she added.
The ordeal, in Junki’s own words, dates back to his days as a “break-even freelancer” in Toronto. coffee talk And its Seattle setting is relatable.
“When I was doing freelance comics work, I would often spend hours in cafes because of the background noise. The barista had memorized my order.Oddly enough, people saw me painting, so they chatted with me,” she recalled.
“There was a bodybuilder who loved cartoons, a curious chef who was always on my mind, and a textile factory owner who wanted new pattern ideas. It was kind of an interesting experience and it certainly made me nervous!”
relationship building
For Anna, she said that the key to creating the right player experience is making the character feel like the player’s friend.
“The process is a lot like watching a sitcom. It makes you want to know what’s going on in life, you care, ”said Anna.
“Of course, in this case it’s even more difficult because many of the characters are already familiar to the player and we don’t want our friends to feel like strangers! There’s pressure to keep enjoying the pixel folks and feeling invested in your own personal story.”
keep the magic
Of course, both challenges in writing the sequel were to justify the existing work. but we had to maintain the relaxed, magical experience that so many players already enjoyed… so no pressure!
Anna played her first game and it made a big impact. like me,” she said.
“Fortunately, the communication channel between everyone at Toge who worked on the original game and Jho, my fellow writer with a longstanding relationship with the project, was always completely open. It was a collaborative effort. Now, I hope fans of the original game will enjoy reading this sequel as much as I enjoyed working on it.”
