Boundary is a game about astronauts. astronomical observer—they were floating in space with gunfights at each other, and if space sounds like a challenging place to shoot guns at people, then you would be right. It’s not the ideal location, but aside from the tactical infantry combat, it’s a lot of fun.
bounds freed with Early Access on Steam (opens in new tab) It was launched a week ago and so far has received “mostly positive” ratings from user reviewers. I haven’t spent a lot of time on Boundary as I’ve been concentrating on his XDefiant beta, but I’ve played enough that I feel mostly positive about it.
There are classic FPS modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination Point Capture mode, and TDM without respawns. This presentation reminds me a bit of Fractured Space, a cool ship combat game that sadly ended in 2018.
WASD moves Space in the normal direction, Space and Ctrl move up and down, and Shift boosts. Unlike Asteroids, which must be manually pushed in the opposite direction of movement to stop. It stops automatically and simplifies movement, so the game isn’t primarily about turning off and on thrusters like Lunar Lander. Also, firing a sniper rifle will no longer flip you backwards. It might be funny, but I’m not sure Boundary would be fun if it simulated all the reasons why a shootout in space would be unwise.
However, many real-space problems are represented. Enemies can be in all directions and can be difficult to spot as they are clothed in white while floating outside the White Space Station. Target marking therefore plays an important role. Sound design is great. Nearby gunshots are faintly audible for playability, but otherwise sound like they’re caused by vibrations when something touches the suit. Your suit can be torn even by a hit that doesn’t kill you, and he has to hold down the F key to patch it (which is what real astronauts do when they get shot). the same as).
Kind of like a shooter where no clipping outside levels is encouraged. You can run around inside the space station bits, or you can go “outside” and plunge into the darkness of space. Lobbing sniper bullets on the map is fun, but if you float too far out of cover, you’ll be easily spotted by the darkness of space and sitting ducks in lock-on rockets. Shouldn’t we make black space suits for our soldiers?)
Boundary has a regular early access price of $25 (currently selling for $22.49), but the price will increase after full release. The developer expects it to remain in early access for one year from six months.
It strikes me that Morgan was talking about such games the other day when he said cool and fun multiplayer games could exist without the huge live service phenomenon happening. I don’t think Boundary’s next he’ll be an FPS mega-hit, but we’ll dig into it.
One area that could be improved is the English translation. Boundary is made by a small Chinese studio called Surgical Scalpels, who don’t really care about getting an ‘assist’. It’s just a cosmic story, maybe.
