If you are still unaware of this news, then I admire and respect everyone whose life choices mean otherwise. Spent the weekend messing with the rest of the platform’s “verification” system, further ruining the $44 billion purchase.
For most of Twitter’s existence, certain users could be “verified” by verifying their identity on the site. This is true whether you are a celebrity, athlete, company, media, famous or not. all There is a risk that your account will be impersonated under the guise of false information or fraud.
And for almost as long, certain weirdos have thing I saw this as a sign of some kind of left-wing media conspiracy, seeing a system designed only to prove that users are who they say they are (necessary for social media platforms).
That’s a big reason why Musk finally got rid of this old verification system last week.replaced it with a “verified” system that required users to pay $8 to receive a “verified” badge, but that didn’t “verify” their identity at all.
Anyway, things got particularly ridiculous over the weekend when it was revealed that most of the previously verified accounts weren’t going to pay $8… not even billionaire celebrities. In fact, many people openly mocked Musk and his decision. In return, Musk himself ordered certain high-profile users to be given a verified badge, at Twitter’s expense, leading to an incredible scene. Turning Down Offers Like LeBron James Video game trader Wario64 has over 1 million followers and is one of the site’s most popular users. His account was forcibly marked with a “blue checkmark” and then deleted again.
Amid all the chaos, there was a notable (and wild) series of reactions from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney to the event in the video game space. I’ll paste his entire Twitter thread here. Officially it should be fixed:
(Note: The #BlockTheBlue hashtag was born from people who quickly realized that the kind of person who pays Musk $8 a month to use Twitter is the kind of person you want to block right away. .)
