People are doing so many cool things with Doom modding these days.first discovered by alpha beta gamer (opens in new tab), Captain Wayne – Vacation Despair (opens in new tab) It boasts the dirty “smart people doing stupid guys”, Duke Nukem-like sense of humor, and the colorful, nautical fun of Spongebob Squarepants.
The presentation and graphics are where Captain Wayne knocks it out of the park—the character sprites have a perfect 90s animated look that resembles a pizza tower (opens in new tab), and all in this groovy Tequila Sunrise color palette. Seriously, I love both the free demo here and the environment hinted at in the post-level screenshots on Steam. It’s a cross between “Florida retirement village ocean-themed steakhouse” and “80s lounge glam.”
Cheap nautical gags abound, and some of my favorites include the women’s restroom labeled “No Man’s Head” and the ubiquitous advertisements for “Melville Whale Oil.” Most of the soundtrack is a pretty decent heavy metal joint that drives the action, but I was really ticked off by the progressive organ line that developer Ciaran Games put in —more than that please. He has a very cheeky and crazy sensibility, and that extends to his gameplay as well.
Your weapons are classic Boomer shooter staples, but they’re all great (that is, built on Doom) with a fun Captain Wayne twist. Most of them are presented as different “modes” of the excellent Skipper’s robotic arm, with the only exception being the perfectly classic big-ass pirate cannon as Rocket his launcher. My favorite is easily humble melee, but here’s a morbid insta-jib like Dusk’s broadsword with his charge-up ability boosted. (opens in new tab)Instakill Windup’s melee power attack is probably one of the most slumbering things you can chuck into a shooter for more fun right away.
The demo’s lone level struck a nice balance between twisty switchback level design and “this feels like a real place”, with some standout encounters. My favorite is his arena, a classic baby boomer shooter set up in and around the hotel pool. Enemies shoot pot shots out of the water when zooming poolside.
