Fallout and The Outer Worlds co-creator Tim Cain has launched a YouTube channel covering stories from his 30+ year career in the games industry. One of the most surprising pieces of information he’s shared in the week since he’s been online is that he co-founded the company with fellow former Interplay Fallout celebrity Troika. . Almost a Lord of the Rings RPG (opens in new tab).
Cain still has footage of the demo mocked up in 2000. It is on his Arcanum engine, launches in the game’s main his menu, and shares many of its UI elements. Interestingly, instead of the admittedly drab (but charming) Arcanum’s Fallout-style modular he tiles, we have this very gorgeous pre-rendered background art like Baldur’s Gate. If I didn’t know better, I would have guessed that this was the prototype for Temple of the Elemental Evil after Troika (most his D&D of all the D&D games). (opens in new tab)).
According to Cain, after acquiring the rights to the LotR books, Troika struck a deal with the now-defunct publisher Sierra to make demos (but not the movies! familiar situation (opens in new tab)). “Sierra loved what they saw,” Cain says in the video. Sierra went bankrupt in his 2002 and LotR CRPG is Dodo or Gilmore Girls Jess Mariano spinoff (opens in new tab).
Cain says the game was a sort of “Shadow Fellowship” follow-up that paved the way for Frodo and the gang. This sounds like his PS2 Lord of the Rings JRPG from EA Redwood. third age (opens in new tab)Honestly this doesn’t piss me off as much as losing on this timeline but yeah rule Take a peek at the never-before-seen prototype Troika RPG powered by Arcanum’s engine, or at least for freaks like me.
Another video shows Cain participating in the game Earth 2. Arcana 2: Journey to the Heart of Arcana (opens in new tab), never made it past the design documentation phase. As an aside, you can see his cocky PC Gamer Editor’s Choice medallion in his big box of Arcanum held up by Cain. If Troika was trying to make a first-person sequel to the Source engine, Arcanum, who knows if he would have gone to work on one of my favorite games, Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines. I don’t know either. (opens in new tab).
of one more video Over the past week, Cain revealed that the legendaryly difficult development of this first-person vampire RPG was even more ambitious. Troika suggested a multiplayer mode Cain affectionately called “Counter-Bite”. Teams of vampire hunters attempt to awaken or stake powerful, sleeping elder vampires. Activision (perhaps very wisely) decided that Troika had already gone too far, and commissioned Counter-Bite to another studio before ditching VtMB’s multiplayer elements altogether.Ikinari Battle Royale VtM Game Blood Hunt (opens in new tab) It seems to me that there are far fewer “out there” ideas.
It’s only been a little over a week, and Cain has blown the minds of this RPG fan many times over with his candid look at the development of his game—and I’ve yet to start a video titled I have notThe true purpose of the Vault in Fallout (opens in new tab)Cain says he is now in semi-retirement and continues to consult on projects with Obsidian and other developers. game cain (opens in new tab) The series is worth watching—he should do an episode like Troika Fallout Post-apocalyptic RPG prototype (opens in new tab) After all, right?
