One of the biggest annoyances when trying to work on a laptop is the single screen setup. If you’re used to working with multiple monitors, having one monitor is very limiting as you have to constantly switch between apps instead of having all the information you need on the screen right away. There is a possibility. With more people working from home, more and more solutions to this problem are starting to emerge, but his Spacetop with an AR screen has got to be one of the coolest of all time.
Spacetop is perhaps a new kind of laptop. Instead of boasting a screen and keyboard in a clamshell configuration, Spacetop offers as many screens as you need in a full-size keyboard and glasses setup. It feels a little sci-fi, but Wired (opens in new tab) I recently got hands-on with this device and it seems to work very well with our current reality.
This setup weighs less than 1.5 kg and is by no means a gaming laptop, but the technology could be great for future PC gamers. In its current form, Spacetop’s keyboard has great connectivity, including two 10Gbps USB Type-C, both of which support 65W fast charging and DisplayPort 1.4 for connecting external screens. Add to this a 3.5 mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.
But with the included AR goggles, the idea is that you probably don’t need to. It looks a little silly, but it has 1080p resolution per eye and you can basically see as much of the screen as you like. Reportedly very intuitive and easy to set up and navigate, the text is clear enough to read, and the glasses are said to be comfortable to wear. Prescription lenses are also available for purchase, which is very reassuring for someone like me who wears glasses every day.
But Spacetop itself is a pretty barebones machine. It runs a custom-built OS, a bit like a working Chromebook. Basically any web app works fine, so it’s great for email, Google Docs, working on YouTube, reading your favorite articles on PC Gamer, and more.I would also like to try game streaming and real games, but it looks like a prototype for XR extended glasses (opens in new tab) For that, what we tried might still be a better choice.
I am developing a package good view (opens in new tab) We’re working with AR glasses maker NReal and Wistron, a brand known for developing Dell and HP laptops. Spacetop is currently only available for purchase through: Invite-only program (opens in new tab) $2,000 will be refunded for this offer. Sightful wants to target enthusiastic early adopters who will help develop the product based on their feedback. So if you’re going to participate, just tell them you want this for your game.
