The Front is a ‘survival open world craft shooter’ that promises a little bit of everything. Players are set as resistance fighters who travel back in time to stop the rise of an oppressive empire using technology derived from mysterious relics to conquer the world. It sounds pretty easy for a sci-fi shooter setting, but it’s not immediately terrible. But for some reason there are also zombies running around, dealing with “exiles, thugs and rebels”, driving tanks, flying planes, and even building and defending bases “with tower defense-style traps.” I have. Not to mention the weather looks pretty bad too.
Games that throw in everything and kitchen sinks often end up in a directionless mess, but The Front’s trailer actually looks interesting to me. The feel of Rust and DayZ is obvious, with giant techno-pyramids that may or may not be under siege, squadrons of armored vehicles and helicopters, some sort of giant UFO with shields creeping overhead, flying airships, camping, etc. There is also Going out with the boys, some nice looking houses…it’s really a mashup of post-apocalyptic stuff, with no apparent connection except people running around shooting each other.
