Quake modding site Slipgate Sightseer has released an entire episode’s worth of maps for a classic FPS without combat. Expedition Jam 3 The map pack follows in the footsteps of Before pacifist community jam The Quaddicted Quake fan site offers 14 levels entirely focused on platforming and exploration.
I first checked the map Upright in Blue by author Recycledoj. And I was surprised to find a modern urban setting with a synth background his tracks straight out of the original Deus Ex’s Hell’s Kitchen. In this level, you’ll climb through open windows to sneak into cyberpunk corporate headquarters and explore different floors of a skyscraper for keys and clues to the company’s dastardly secrets. The entire time you were there, a mysterious voice tried to contact you on the company phone. I was impressed with how much of his X-Files-esque vibe Recycledoj was able to squeeze out of his ID classics.
Another map I tried, Dream by Colossus, was a completely different ball game. Dream is a collection focused on rocket jumping in stunningly gorgeous floating ruins. Everything is textured with this pink and green marble against a gray and sandy yellow sky. This is an aesthetic that can only be described as “progressive rock album art”. If I hadn’t been paying attention all the time, it would have been a very calming and meditative experience. Hinder my jump.
There are 12 more maps left for Explore Jam 3, but what I’ve seen is already very atmospheric and amazing. We highly recommend you check it out.Requires a copy like Quake to play Great remaster from Nightdiveand a compatible source port – I used impregnable. Simply drop your mod file into a new folder (named ej3 according to the mod’s Readme) within your Quake installation directory, run your source port of choice, and access Explore Jam 3 from his mod menu in-game.
And Explore Jam 3 just scratches the surface of Quake map making. This is a scene as vibrant and imaginative as the scene around Doom.In addition to returning to his previous Explore Jams, Slipgate Sightseer’s brutalist jam It’s already caught my eye and it’s time to check it out esoteric dimensionanother example of psychedelic Van Wizard excellence brought to life in Quake.
