After the phenomenal success of the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo seemed to be on top of the world. But even before the new consoles came along, there were already problems. Lack of third-party support meant that the console’s long-term success was waning.
So Nintendo launched the Wii U as a direct answer, trying to blend casual and hardcore gaming audiences, but it was a disastrous fiasco. So even though the Nintendo 3DS was a success and profitable for the company, overall the company was losing huge amounts of money each year due to operating costs.
