Long before choosing between a necromancer and a sorcerer, you have to make a choice about Diablo 4’s high-res assets. Should I install or not?
The first thing you notice when faced with a choice is the amount of storage required for high resolution assets and the time it takes to download them. Without the high-res assets, the Diablo 4 download would be around 45 GB, but with the high-res assets it would just double in size to around 90 GB.
Depending on how fast your Internet speed is and how much room you have on your PC’s drive, this alone may be enough to make a decision.
If storage and bandwidth don’t matter either way, visuals and performance probably matter. According to Blizzard, “players who play on 4K monitors and play on Ultra settings will benefit most from this pack.” If so, you can enjoy better visuals.
I don’t have much hard data yet, but my personal advice is: Do not download high resolution assets when installing and playing Diablo 4 for the first time. Play with standard assets for a while and see if you find this game interesting. Needs a visual upgrade.
I don’t have a 4K monitor, but I’m playing at 2560×1440 on an RTX 2080 with 16 GB RAM, and I honestly don’t see much difference between high-res and standard assets. Check out some screenshots in the gallery below using both standard and high-res assets (click corners to enlarge). I honestly can’t tell them apart.
They all look the same to me, so I’m going to play without them. It also takes up less storage and I’m completely happy with how the game looks.
The good news is that if you change your mind, you can easily modify your Diablo 4 installation by installing high-res assets or reverting back to standard assets.
How to Install or Remove Diablo 4 High Res Assets
- In the Battlenet client, select Diablo 4 from the game list.
- Above the blue “play” button Click the gear icon
- in the menu “Modify Install”
- In the Modify Installation window, [ă€ăłăčăăŒă«ăźć€æŽ](again) click
- Toggle the checkbox for high resolution assets
If you have high resolution assets installed, unchecking this box will remove them and free up all space on your drive. If you don’t have it installed, checking the box will start downloading a 40 GB high resolution asset.
