Sonic is back with a familiar look. Sonic Superstars takes the speedy blue hedgehog back to its 2D retro roots and completes a playable appearance by some of his best friends to defeat Doctor Eggman again (or very nostalgic robotonic if you are feeling But don’t let the classic look fool you. 4 playable characters
Like most classic Sonic titles, Sonic Superstars has more than just the lead hedgehog as a playable character. This time around, there are four heroes to choose from, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles Tales Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna, along with her original Sonic CD costume, Amy Rose.
In the spirit of retro Sonic, each of these characters has unique abilities that are perfect for different playstyles and types of playthroughs. Sonic has speed, Tails has high flight, Knuckles can glide horizontally and climb structures, and Amy can destroy walls and double jump with the widest damage radius of any character. They come in the form of tons of new enemies and more obstacles that you have to learn how to avoid and defeat. In some cases, a job may take longer than a standard badnik bounce. Expect to face off against mini-bosses and Eggman’s own mechanized concoctions that will try to block your progress. Or so the doctor hopes.
Use the power of Chaos Emerald
Another new feature in the world of Sonic the Hedgehog is wielding the power of individual Chaos Emeralds. Once you’ve found the secret ring in the level, you’ll need to complete the grappling hook minigame. In this mini-game, you must dodge obstacles and grab glowing gems.
Sega has revealed two. One turns you into water to climb waterfalls, and his other unleashes an army of clones to wipe out your enemies. This means for the first time he doesn’t have to wait to collect all seven emeralds to give Sonic a super ability. Each emerald is just as important as collecting them all, giving you new ways to play with each special stage. The possibilities for different powers are almost endless as you have to find seven of them.
