After a 3 year hiatus, Super Mega Baseball is back with tons of new features. Super Mega Baseball 4 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor with a focus on arcade baseball action, but don’t be fooled. The game still contains an enormous amount of depth. In addition to 6 new stadiums (20 total), the game will feature his over 200 former professional baseball players for the first time, a new Shuffle His Draft, his deck building mode, and more visuals/games across the board. An audio upgrade has been added. Let’s see how it stacks up!
The gameplay in Super Mega Baseball 4 is nearly identical to the great gameplay you’ve come to expect from the series, with a few notable additions. For one, the game now has options to optimize graphics and performance. By default, the game starts in “Best Graphics” mode, but we recommend changing this to “Best Performance”. Prioritizing graphics makes for a less than ideal hitting experience, at least for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. The lower framerate made it much more difficult to time swings while batting. We know Super Mega Baseball 4 has a bit of a visual upgrade, but it’s less obvious on the Switch. For me, the gameplay is much better with the higher frame rates that I’m used to in Super Mega Baseball 3. So if you’ve got the game and frame rate is a concern, try performance mode before overdoing it. far. In addition to gameplay variations, SMB 4 incorporates 55 new “Team Chemistry” traits. Traits were already part of the series, but these will allow even greater customization of your team roster. Some examples of traits might be “good at hitting off-speed pitches” or “good at hitting fast balls”, of those types. It might sound like a lot, but if you don’t mind that kind of depth, it’s not too intrusive. You can play and enjoy the game without digging too deep into these systems. I enjoy the fun quirks and features, but they’re not very adaptable to moment-to-moment gameplay. I’m also into “deck building” in games, but MLB The Show fans of that feature will feel right at home here.
One of the big new features this year is over 200 new “legendary” characters. These are MLB past players from different eras, such as Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron. This is a really cool new feature. One thing I’ve wanted for a while was to play as part of his licensed MLB player in Super Mega Baseball 4. So this is a great step in that direction. Of course, you can create your own leagues and teams using the familiar classic his pantheon of SMB players, but you can now mix in some of Legends his players as well. For those who want a taste of “sanctioned” baseball, you can name your team’s players based on real-world players, or even name your team after an MLB team. I was actually playing online for a team called the Blue Jays, and that team had added current players to their roster, so I’m playing with these real-world players when needed. You can get that kind of vibe. Then why not add Hank Aaron to the middle of your lineup? If I had to sum up SMB 4 in one word, it would be “customizability.” Players can really customize how they play. This is really amazing.
The graphics have definitely improved in Super Mega Baseball 4. Animations, character models, and stadiums in particular all shine. Again, I tend to favor performance over graphics, but it does come with a fair amount of polish. There are currently 20 ballparks, each team in the league has a corresponding stadium, and each team is given a “home” ballpark. There’s also a lot of focus on the audio side. The soundtrack is very robust and diverse. The sound of the stadium and the voice of the audience can also be heard more clearly. The umpire’s voice is as goofy as ever, and we should hear some fun strikeout calls. Pretty interesting, isn’t it? There is plenty for baseball fans to enjoy here.
Multiplayer modes and online features are unique among many multiplayer games on Switch. Super Mega Baseball 4 continues that tradition, offering players many party options both locally and online, or a combination of the two. Online he’s 2 local, 2 remote and he wants to play with 4? And with cross-play across all platforms, including the latest generation consoles like PS5 and Xbox series systems, you’ll enjoy great fidelity in multiplayer. The online pennant race is still one of my favorite online modes him. You can do these weekly, but just joining in and playing a few quick games is also a great way to do it. For those of you who don’t know, online games are 5 innings long instead of 9, so you can play a lot of baseball in a short amount of time.
