I generally have a “kill if you find it” policy when it comes to Thalmor in Skyrim. Because fantasy Nazis suck. However, I have put that policy on hold for a new mod called The Thalmor’s Shadow – Taliesin. This mod allows you to recruit his NPC companion after encountering him surrounded by dead followers of Talos and wearing the characteristic Thalmor shoulder pad robes.
To be fair, Taliesin is a former member of the big Elf Bigoted Club. As the mod’s description says, “A former Thalmor member wants a clean start. Only you can save him from his previous life.” Taliesin is a fully voiced companion similar to Vilja and Inigo , which has its own storyline and comments on places visited and quests it participates in to an extent that someone like Lydia would not normally do. He is also a flicker who uses ice spike spells and has a magical dagger with a name. The way he giggles after killing a frost troll or a Faltmer is kind of creepy.
Recently, modders have made extensive use of AI-derived voices to hijack annoying shopkeepers’ jobs, flee in fear from Doctor Who’s weeping angels, and bewilder the AI’s inability to solve Skyrim’s simplest puzzles. It embodies a mod that can be done, Taliesin said. Pronounced in an old-fashioned way. Actor Pat Mahoney gives him a snarky tone and a rich vein of sarcasm and sass. He looks overwhelmed by the sights of Skyrim, a sharp contrast to his other followers. Take him to Solitude, and he’ll sniff out the fact that it’s the capital of all Skyrim, but servants like Serana express surprise at the size of the windmill.
Skyrim Special Edition brings back a bit of follower mods. Other notable recent releases include: Yaksha, Orc Healer, Princess of Daggerfall called Secundaand legendary heroes Eric in red. These are a little more ongoing than Taliesin, but worth keeping an eye on. It wasn’t until Fallout 4’s Nick Valentine came along that Bethesda really nailed down a companion you’d want to take with you from start to finish, an essential part of the game, and modders wanted Skyrim to do this. Great to see you continue to close the gap.
