Russia … subway … what?
our game Russian subway dog Released today on Xbox One! This is a single-screen arcade game inspired by real stray dogs in the Moscow Metro. We talk about how we ended up creating a game with such an unusual theme, and the fresh approach we took to add depth, humor, and variety to classic score-chasing gameplay. To do.
The bud of the idea started about a decade ago when I read an online article about a handful of stragglers who had learned how to navigate Moscow’s labyrinthine metro. For those unfamiliar with these clever canines, they actually commute to downtown Moscow every day, scavenge for food from pedestrians passing by, and then return each night to their quiet suburban homes to sleep. One of these dogs was so loved that a memorial statue was erected in his honor.
While reading these stray articles, I also discovered the amazing architecture of the city’s subway stations. These are not simple tiled hallways with a single color. Styles range from church-like stations with stained-glass windows to ultra-modern Mondrian-inspired designs with intersecting lines and rectangles.
The dogs were cute and smart, and the Soviet-era metro stations were grand and palatial (seriously, look them up). I knew I had to make this game!
Eat Em Up Gameplay
So what about adorable animals? check! Beautiful backgrounds? Check! But how do we play?
As the titular “subway dog,” you scramble up and down each subway platform, trying to keep your diet on track. The stamina bar acts as a combination of hunger and life he meter, constantly depleting even while fighting for food to replenish. Trains arrive at stations and regularly drop off and steal commuters eating and drinking a variety of delicious snacks and drinks. With just a quick bark behind them, they can toss the bait up and snatch it from the air.
Of course, these trains also come with rival stray dogs and the subway’s outrageous wildlife, so there’s a certain amount of competition. Everything from pigeons in the subway to bears in the subway will target your food, and you’ll lose points and potential stamina if you snag a snack.
You clear this competition with the help of a very unstable vodka. These bottles of liquor, carried by random passengers, cause violent explosions when they hit the ground. You can time your powerful roar to launch the bottle into the air. This is a very important skill as you can cook wild animals or toast food in a vodka blast to create a more filling and higher scoring meal.
By juggling multipliers and air catch combos, a seasoned player can turn a small meal worth dozens of points into a sumptuous feast worth thousands of points. If a rival dog grabs a valuable meal, those points will be deducted from your score, giving you negative points, so high risk/high reward. ah!
System simulation is the key!
This basic eating-walking gameplay is Russian subway dogA truly unique addition to the arcade genre: system simulation. It also has fancy names like ‘multiplicative design’, ‘chemical engine’, or just ’emergent gameplay’, but in short, every part of the game is designed in such a way that It means that it interacts with all other parts. The real world, or at least a fun cartoon logic version of the real world.
of Russian subway dog This means Any A fire source cooks food and melts snow. Snow can chill cooked food or freeze fluttering fish into chunks of ice that can fly around the stage. The same power-up that burns fire can be eaten by a rival dog, giving them a fire howl instead. Of course, you can also cook food with that fire roar. You can also feed the bears before cooking to fatten them to produce higher quality meat, or give them chocolate (which is toxic to dogs) to produce toxic meat. Almost everything in the game has multiple uses and interactions.
As a result, there are tons of secret tricks that can be discovered and exploited. Every combination of food, people and wildlife on your platform has its own strategic possibilities and interesting decisions to make in the blink of an eye.
