“Killzone was our first IP, testing all our ideas and seeing how things work,” said van Beek. “We had some great ideas, but also some ideas that didn’t really work. What I’ve found is that we still really need heroes that people can hold onto and relate to, so when you’re making an entire villain-based IP, it’s hard to do good storytelling. It was something we definitely took in.
“Because of its idiosyncrasies, it just didn’t resonate with me at all, so when I was making Horizon, I wanted to target a wider audience and tell a bigger story that would be relevant to more people. I thought I would.”
Technical director Michiel van der Leeuw also expressed his desire to take the next step after PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall.
