Anime art styles are constantly changing.programs like Astro boy and Urusei Yatsura Influenced by western art styles (especially Disney) in the 1960s, 70s and early 80s. His shows from the late 80’s to early 2000’s were influenced by his predecessor and created a distinctive style that is easily recognized as Japanese anime by audiences around the world. Modern anime, as we know it today, is similarly heavily influenced by previous iterations of this medium.

Overcoming decades of change, anime as an industry and artI’ve witnessed changes in shape, and it’s amazing how little remains the same. The metaphors, of course, survive, but certain sensibilities come and go. One of my all-time favorite jokes is the noodle arm joke. Noodle arms have many names. Wavy arms. undulating arms. worm arms. The nomenclature is very broad. Noodle arms also come in different styles. Beyond a fun visual gag, this method of drawing character arms is much deeper and more versatile than you might think.
What exactly is a noodle arm?
Don’t mess with me, Mr. Nagatoro
It’s a recent series that has made a full-fledged re-emergence of Noodle Arms into the anime canon. Don’t tease me, Mr. Nagatoro. In both seasons of the show, the main antagonist Nagatoro is frequently depicted wielding Noodle’s arm. This most commonly happens when she’s making fun of her seniors (which, admittedly, is a large part of the show). Nagatoro’s arm is the most standard type of noodle arm. It is shaped like a noodle and has no joints, hands or fingers. She often uses them to touch, hit, and slap her seniors for comedic effect. Nagatoro’s Noodle Arms are often used when she is energetic, curious, or intentionally cute or annoying.
Don’t falter Jahi!
Another example of modern noodle arms can be found at: Don’t falter Jahi! A series about the inhabitants of the Dark Realm exiled to Earth. Jahee shares similar traits and traits with Nagatoro, but her noodle arms are less frequent. Jahee’s noodle arms show her overpowering emotions (usually happiness) and often convey her reverting to her childlike appearance.
fullmetal alchemist brotherhood
Alphonse Elric fullmetal alchemist brotherhood There are also scenes where his slimy appendages are exposed (not). Unlike other Noodle his arm characters, Alphonse still has fingers at the ends of his arms, even though he has no joints or hands. These noodles on his arm are also used to represent Alphonse’s emotional immaturity and childish nature, and the overall detailing sets it apart from contemporaneous models.
Variation of noodle arm
wave arm and worm arm
cowboy bebop
Noodle arm variants have been around in anime for years. One of his best known examples of this is by Ed. cowboy bebop. She’s a genius hacker who tends to flap her limbs when she’s focused (usually when she’s hacking) or when she’s having fun. The difference between the traditional noodle her arm and the more detailed corrugated arm is primarily a result of her art style and animation. Noodle arms lack detail, but wavy arms are often seen in more realistic shows that portray intentionally silly characters. We retain details of the joints, hands and fingers and often add them to arm animations for added comedic value.
Bungo Stray Dogs
Wave arms are also called worm arms because they often resemble worms in thickness, length, and animation.Dazai Bungo Stray Dogs If you act playfully or pretend you don’t know what’s going on around you, you’ll often get Wormarms. The difference between Dazai’s worm arm and other character arm variations is that Dazai’s worm his arms have pointed tips instead of hands, but retain the wavy arm length and animation.
Azumanga Daioh
Although Chiyo Chichi has a naturally occurring worm arm (i.e. it always looks the same and is not the result of a change in art style), his arm is so distinctive that it should be included. bottom. His long, slender arms have rounded ends and have no joints, hands or fingers. The fact that these are his natural arms is a gift to weaves all over the world. Chiyo Chichi’s Worm His Arm His scene is always there, so you don’t have to search for it.
fin arms
Azumanga Daioh (re-)
Chiyo herself does not have a worm arm, but sometimes has a variation called a fin arm. Fin arms are so named because they resemble the fins of sharks and dolphins. Fin arms are usually short, stocky, and triangular in shape, with no joints, hands, or fingers. In some anime, Finn’s arms are long and thin, sometimes with elbow joints, but they rarely move as much as Noodle’s or Worm’s. The stiffness of the finned arm helps convey the character’s endearing helplessness in less-than-ideal situations, but is mostly comedic.
Vanitas case study
Noah is famous Vanitas case study Because of his Finn Arms, thanks to the fact that we barely know what’s going on. Despite being a tall and powerful vampire, he is often pictured with Finn Arms to add to his cute demeanor and completely liberated vibe.
Urusei Yatsura
Fin arms are also used to indicate that a character is a baby, as in Ten. Urusei Yatsura. The baby character’s fins differ from his arms in that they often have small hands or fingers on the ends to show that the character is actually just a baby, rather than a representation of the character. Nonetheless, it still counts as a fin arm thanks to the lack of mobility of the appendages.
For anime and manga artists, noodle arms are a great way to express a character’s thoughts, feelings, and intended movements. It is often used in chibi art styles, but when inserted into media that traditionally use fully drawn arms or hands, it adds a sense of humor and a seldom-out-of-lightness.
Few people do not enjoy humans, animals, or creatures with wiggly or stubby arms in some kind of cute and funny way. It extends to games as well.Even in the slug race faster than light Blessed with Worm Arms, but no other way.
