Star Wars Outlaws, published by Ubisoft, is the Star Wars game where you finally get to play the blaster-wielding villain who might have thought the lightsaber was a light cavalry weapon. It comes with certain expectations. Since this isn’t a Rayman game, its expectations include an open world that’s probably too big for itself.
In a recent interview at Comic-Con, creative director Julian Gerriti explained that open-world locations such as Outlaws’ desert moon Toshara are so large that they would need to give player character Kay Vess a dedicated speeder to traverse. “There’s not just this bustling city. In Toshara’s case, it’s called Milogana, but there’s all the wilds outside that players and Kay can go out and explore, driven by purpose but distracted by curiosity. But the distance is pretty vast. So to make it fun, accessible, and increase access for players, we came up with the speeder.”
Gelity went on to explain the inspiration for how the speeder looks and operates, saying, “It wasn’t something that had been done before in Star Wars. It was motocross, and it was motocross in the sense that it really made traveling fun. It was thrilling and full of tricks, speed, chasing and all that stuff.”
Luckily, Ubisoft Massive’s developers have also said that Outlaws’ planets will not be procedurally generated, but will instead be “handcrafted.” In an interview with Edge magazine, Gelity explained that these handcrafted worlds would not be the size of his entire Assassin’s Creed game. “It’s a rough analogy, but the size of a planet is roughly [equivalent to] For example, two of the zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” he said. “It could be he two or he three zones. “
When asked if the player could customize the speeder by repainting it or applying stickers, he replied, “I don’t know about the stickers, but you can do some personalization.” i like it.
After flying around the world of the Old Republic in speeders, I’d love to try Outlaws again. I wish we could do that across maps with lots of interesting and unique locations instead of bland repeatable activities.
“Star Wars Outlaws” will be released in 2024.
