[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for the end of season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina, in order to talk about what season 4 might bring.]
Vox Machina is more aflung than theyâve ever been by the end of season 3. Theyâve been through the wringer; theyâve been to hell and back, literally; and one of them has even died (for a not-insignificant amount of time!). So itâs no surprise that by the end of the third season theyâre making big changes. Except that weâre watching a show called The Legend of Vox Machina, so one would hope that theyâre back at the adventures we know and love, yâknow, someday.
And that day is soon! Or at least on its way: Prime Video announced on Wednesday that it was picking The Legend of Vox Machina up for a fourth season. Which is good, because while that ending was more or less a good place to leave our fair heroes, those weird hooded cultists at the end appeared to be summoning something nefarious. And as Pike (Ashley Johnson) puts it: If danger pops up again, who are they going to call?
With season 4 officially on the way, hereâs everything we know about the upcoming season so far.
Is The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 happening?
Prime Video officially confirmed a fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina on Oct 23. Which was to be expected: There were rumblings in May that SAG-AFTRA production listings suggested a fourth and even fifth season was in development. Plus, being in the Critical Role business right now seems very good. The troupe is enjoying a lot of success with dynamic actual play shows and delivering on their hope for more live shows by going on a global tour. With other animated adaptations on the way (more on that below), Critical Role is really on a roll (Iâm sorry), and season 4 seems like only the logical thing to do.
âWe are beyond thrilled – and grateful – to continue the epic and wild adventures of Vex, Vax, Keyleth, Percy, Pike, Grog and everyoneâs favorite character – Scanlan,â executive producer (and Scanlan voice actor) Sam Riegel said in a statement. âWith each season, this show levels up, and we already have big plans to level up both our heroes and villains in Season Four.â
When will The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 be released on Prime Video?
Between the previous seasons, fans had to wait somewhere between a year and a year and a half. Those seasons were in production well in the past: When Prime Video acquired the rights in November 2019, it announced it would be giving the show a green light for more before season 1 had even premiered. And ahead of the season 2 premiere, Vox Machina was renewed for its third season.
With a renewal notice officially in hand, itâs possible that Vox Machina season 4 more or less follows the same pattern, meaning we could expect it sometime next year. But it seems likely that the earliest weâd see it would be the end of 2025, maybe even 2026.
What would Vox Machina season 4 be about?
With a show like Vox Machina â being adapted from an actual play series and condensing dozens of hours into around six hours of TV â thereâs plenty of options for where the story could take them next. But one thing seems certain: No matter where Vox Machina ends up, theyâre facing real trouble with the person introduced in that final teaser.
We wonât get too deep into spoilers for the campaign (you can always go watch it if you want the full picture of what that final tease was about). But with Vox Machina committed to trying to live their lives, it seems likely that theyâll be called back to action to take on this new foe.
And life probably wonât be as simple as all of them hope. While a lot of Vox Machina members leveled up, fought personal demons, and won this season, the finale promises that there might still be a cost to pay for all thatâŠ
What Critical Role stuff should I check out while I wait for season 4?
Well, thereâs obviously the actual Critical Role channel, which not only has a lot of original Vox Machina actual play content, but also includes the newer spinoff series like Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, Bells Hells, and more. Theyâve even moved on from pure Dungeons & Dragons and developed their own systems.
Thereâs also the mounting Mighty Nein fervor that you can get in on. That original campaign is also on YouTube, but itâs being adapted to Prime Video too. No release date has been given, but Travis Willingham (who plays Grog) tells Polygon that production is well underway.
âWe have written all of season 1. The storyboards are all being locked, if they havenât been already. So itâs off to our overseas studio. Weâre getting animation tests back and seeing things come back in color. Weâve designed all the characters. The magical spells and effects are being considered. Weâre talking about music, and how itâs going to be different from Vox,â Willingham said at Fantastic Fest. âSo itâs definitely more than halfway done, and I think everybodyâs going to be really thrilled with the way itâs turning out.â
