The Sims 4 Adds Sexual Orientation As a Feature

The Sims series has always allowed player characters to romance sims of the same gender, but players have not been able to specify sexual and romantic attractions for sims. However, this will change for the first time in a future update to The Sims 4.

This feature currently only allows players to choose the gender of the binary due to technical restrictions, but the team eventually pointed out that it “extended this to include additional gender identity that is not currently available.” ..

In the FAQ section of the announcement post, Maxis defended the choice to implement this feature, explaining that these options can be ignored and Sims works normally, but the menu itself cannot be toggled. “We’re trying to give players the option to switch specific gameplay features, but LGBTQIA + IDs are real, not switching on and off.”

This isn’t the only feature Maxis has added to The Sims 4 to better represent the LGBTQIA + player experience. In May, the team added a customizable pronoun to the game. And earlier this year, the team withdrew the cancellation of the release of the My Wedding Stories pack in Russia. This was initially shelved due to a strange story that contradicts Russian anti-homosexuality.
