It makes sense for SSDs to get hotter and hotter as they get faster and faster. SSD heatsinks are a great solution to mitigate this, but if you’re like me, I like to keep things stylish and flashy. These shiny metal heatsinks from EK cool your SSD while at the same time looking cool.
The EK-Quantum Convection Heat Sink is a passive aluminum block for M.2 NVMe SSDs. According to the product page, “prevent heat throttling when there is sufficient airflow or significantly extend the time it takes for SSD heat throttling to occur.” This is exactly what the heat sink is supposed to do. So the EK Gold Star is there.
The heatsink is made of “luxury” aluminum with a nickel finish and is plated with real gold. Available colors are black, silver, nickel, and gold. What is surprising is that EK is not following the liquid cooling route with that in mind. This heatsink is compatible with single-sided and double-sided M.2 NVMe SSDs and has been tested with drives up to 4TB. Unfortunately, the EK should be better than the SSD without a heatsink, but it doesn’t show how much the SSD can cool.
Installation seems very easy. Turn the back plate over to align it with the mounting holes in another screw set on the heatsink. The back plate separates from the heatsink body, leaving space for the double-sided SSD. In essence, there’s nothing that a small driver and someone with a positive attitude can’t handle.
So do you need a heatsink for your M.2. NVMe SSD? I think so. High storage densities on these drives can cause overheating and impact performance. Heat sinks help maintain their lifespan and the duration of best performance during large file transfers. Now, do you need a flashy gold-plated heatsink? Only you can answer it. Need a flashy gold-plated heatsink? My wallet says no, but my heart says yes.
The heat sink is EK website (Opens in a new tab).. It retails for $ 36 and ships in about a week. Until then, I’m thinking about how SSDs look great in gold.
