Two months ago, Sony reimagined PS Plus, its long-running membership program for PlayStation owners. Now it looks a lot like Microsoft’s Game Pass. For roughly the same amount of money, both offer access to a Netflix-style games-on-demand library. Obviously I needed to stack the two services on top of each other.
price
Game Pass is available as a subscription for consoles, PC, or both. The price for two separate tiers is $10/month. Xbox Live Ultimate joins the two, offering access to the EA Play Library (a similar games on demand service) and Xbox Live Gold for $15/month. There is no way to pay for months or a year upfront with incremental price reductions (at least officially).
PS Plus is also available for subscription, but it gets a lot more complicated. There are two new tiers. For $15 a month, $100 a year, Extra offers monthly free games, online play, and a catalog of on-demand games, including some from Ubisoft’s library. Premium is $18/month or $120/year and adds access to classic games, game trials, and cloud streaming for most games in your library. That’s a big price difference, PS Plus Premium costs more per month, but is actually about 50% cheaper with a one-year contract.

streaming
Game Pass enables cloud streaming for the more expensive Ultimate level fee. The streaming feature is technically still in “beta”, but for all intents and purposes it’s up and running.microsoft Recommendation Internet speed of at least 10 mbps for mobile devices and 20 mbps for consoles and PCs.based on Kotakutest, is it… ok? Despite the recent big advances in cloud gaming, streaming still can’t compete with downloaded games. The delay is small, but not negligible. That’s why cloud gaming is perfect for puzzle games, chill RPGs, light platformers, and other games that don’t require split-second reflexes.
G/O Media can earn commissions
According to Microsoft, “over 100” games are currently available for streaming on Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming, with more being added every few weeks. Currently, the Game Pass library currently has 381 games listed as available for streaming.
To unlock streaming on PS Plus, you’ll need to purchase the $18/month plan. Still, the streaming quality is nothing to write home about. At best, it’s about as good as Xbox Cloud Gaming. Sometimes it’s bad. Nearly 320 games in our premium library can be streamed on your console or PC. A good portion of them are PS3 games and classics rather than the full PlayStation 4 library. for example, Marvel’s Avengers When I’m lost Available in the console, but not in the streaming library.
Most notably, you can’t stream PS Plus games to your phone. This service currently relies on Remote Play. In other words, you need a console to play on mobile and you must be connected to the same his WiFi network.

game library
Of course, a games on demand service can’t beat the one thing it’s supposed to offer: games.
just now, Xbox Game Pass library has about 475 games, but that tally includes libraries from both tiers, including 92 games that are currently part of EA Play. The main draw, of course, is that Microsoft has its entire first-party portfolio on the platform. This also includes the main tent poles. Halo Infinite When Forza Horizon 5alongside blockbusters such as star field When red fall— will be available the day they come out. Third-party games tend to last him a year at the longest, like Rockstar’s open-world hold’em simulator. red dead redemption 2, will be unavailable in a few months. It’s unpredictable.
The library also circulates regularly for third-party games, often serving as a starting point for indie gems. zelda-favorite tunicSnowboard Sim shredderand a puzzle/dungeon crawler root river All released on Game Pass. (here KotakuList of the best games under the radar of Available now. ) the developer acknowledges that: Kotaku Debuting on Game Pass will hit initial sales, but ultimately the publicity trade-off is worth it.
PS Plus Extra currently includes about 430 PS4 and PS5 games, while Premium adds 395 more games from PS1, PS2, PS3 (streaming only) and PSP. Classic is a nice bonus, but by far the biggest draws are PlayStation exclusives like: Horizon Zero Dawn, god of war, Spider-Man: Miles MoralesWhen BloodborneUnlike Microsoft, Sony has promised not to deliver its latest releases on a regular basis, and players will have to wait at least a year if Returnal’s release a year after release is any indication. It seems like a good bet that you have to. 18 months before the new one appeared.
However, there are plenty of strong contenders in the third-party department.games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, prey, Control, DoomWhen tetris effect Everything exists, as do indies like Celeste, outer wild, dead cellsWhen Virginia. Libraries are diverse and recently enhanced from the same day addition I’m lost, is already a 2022 GOTY contender.Ubisoft Components led by assassin’s creed valhalla is also a strong compliment. At the same time, Sony has yet to show that it is, or will be, as aggressive as Microsoft in terms of seeking a constant stream of third-party dates and date additions to his PC in the library. There are no dedicated parts.
Winner: PS Plus
Ali: Going into this exercise, I fully imagined Game Pass’s dominance would be clearly demonstrated, but these two services look basically identical down to the UI. matter. The price is about the same, but the option to pay for his year of PS Plus with a “discount” outperforms Game Pass in that respect. Sure, Game Pass’s big draw is that Microsoft’s first-party games will be included in the service at launch, but Microsoft has released very few first-party games this year. For now, that perk seems like just a marketing line.
Ethan: I also thought Game Pass was going to be the clear winner from now on, but now I’m conflicted too. Not everyone can afford to pay for a full year upfront, but the formulas for this matchup change significantly. There are some other key differences too, and I don’t think one will be the clear winner over the other, but I think it will make it easier for you to decide which one you want to pay for. Want instant access to a meaty back catalog of the best games? PS Plus wins. Want to stay up to date with the best new games released each month and play them on your phone? Game Pass is the way to go.
