Now that the best media streaming service has announced it has suffered a massive data breach, it’s time to beef up your Plex account. An email was sent to affected users this morning, explaining that on August 23rd, “a third party was able to access a limited subset of their data, including emails, usernames and encrypted passwords.” it was done.
All potentially stolen passwords were obscured, but the company “exercises due diligence” to ensure all Plex account passwords have been reset and still require two-factor authentication. It states that it recommends upgrading if you haven’t. in place.
As I was writing this, the actual Plex website was down and the support page said they were looking into the issue. There are no indications that this was part of a data breach, and it could be due to a user suddenly logging in and trying to change their password details.
I’m sure Twitter has a lot of users blaming it for not being ready for everyone to come in and crash the site the moment they’re told to change their login information.
Plex says credit card and other payment information is not stored on its servers and was not accessed in this breach.
Still, now that the site is back online, it’s worth changing your account details as soon as possible to prevent potential breaches in the future.

However, given the current state of the site infrastructure, it seems that they are still struggling to actually deliver these emails.
