To be honest, the more challenging content in a game like Cuphead wasn’t on my wishlist immediately. As you can read in my review of the base game, Cuphead has a lot to love, but for me it simply lacked fun. The Peashooter sound effects immediately brought back the trauma of the first game😅. But without further grief, let’s dive into Delicious Last Course (DLC for short — cute).
First of all, there aren’t many additions to the gameplay formula this time around, which isn’t particularly unexpected from the expansion. You can choose as a playable character from the beginning of The Last Course. She can also be used in the original game, which is a nice bonus. There are also some new items, but the main attraction of the DLC is the content itself, the new set of bosses. This is where you can see animations made more beautifully by Studio MDHR. Gone are the platforming levels, so get ready for some pretty challenging boss gauntlets. Sure, there are some overworld traversals and a few puzzles here and there for a moment’s reprieve, but you’re basically fighting bosses left and right. Some bosses say it’s easy and try to sugar coat it, but they’re not lying. Bosses have an easy mode, but unfortunately they don’t give you the items you need to collect throughout the expansion’s story. Also seeks many sinister bosses.
Multiplayer is a great way to share the load of these boss fights. You will want to experiment with different item and weapon combinations. When I first played Cuphead, I tried pressing the “Shoot” button quickly, but I quickly got tired of it. What helped me was holding the “Shoot” button while jumping. If possible, keep pressing while platforming. Another big advantage is the ability to use scatter shots. It has a very short range but packs a punch as it can hit bosses multiple times. It can also damage surrounding enemies (both above and below). Roundabout shots are also fun, allowing you to hit the target while running away from bosses. This is very useful for certain bosses that require a lot of movement, especially if you’re not facing them all the time. It can still be a great way to land some blows.
It’s hard to knock a delicious Last Course down, but as with the base game, I didn’t find it very enjoyable. If you’re a little glutton for punishment and want more boss fights, a delicious Last Course might be right up your alley…and at just $7.99, it’s easy on your wallet.
