A complete remaster with additional features, characters and battle tweaks, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R maintains a great adaptation with the popular anime and manga properties at its core. The game references all kinds of interactions and events from Hirohiko Araki’s original work, and the attention to detail is outstanding. It’s a clichĂ© when talking about anime titles, but this really is a love letter to all Jojo.
The playable roster consists of a whopping 51 characters, and the diversity is quite impressive. Jojo It’s fun for the fans, and casually exploring each character’s options.
All Star Battle R is probably one of the most technical anime-based fighting games of our time. It has all the features you’d expect from a fighter looking to pacify the competitive scene, including combos, cancels, assists, sidesteps, specials, and supers. There’s depth here that most anime adaptations simply avoid, and learning the ins and outs of the system is really rewarding.
On a mechanical level, this is a solid fighting game, with a good amount of single-player content so you can get used to the experience before diving online. Unfortunately, online services are about to plateau for All Star Battle R. The game’s delay-based netcode is incredibly inconsistent, and his errors are all too common, and perhaps most unforgivable, there is no rematch option once a battle is over. It feels like an online mode from 2014 when the original All-Star Battle launched on PS3, and it just won’t be good enough for 2022.
All Star Battle R is otherwise a great piece of work, so it’s a real shame that the game’s online suite is outdated. Jojo’s bizarre adventure. A technical fighter who always deserves a second chance.
