Marvel’s Midnight Suns is about to dawn, and we’re just a few months away from the XCOM developers at Firaxis taking us on Marvel’s Hero Demon Hunt. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s inexhaustible juggernaut is stuck in the throes of a multiverse of cosmic collisions and madness, Midnight Sons is Marvel’s exploration of that occult age. I have a cursed book. There is a haunted monastery. There is Wolverine with magic runes carved into his tights. Now that we have Blade, at least one vampire.

When is Marvel’s Midnight Sons release date?
Marvel’s Midnight Sons will be released December 2, 2022.
The release of Midnight Suns was originally scheduled for March 2022, but due to delays, it has been postponed, first to the second half of 2022 and then to “the second half of the current fiscal year” at an unspecified time. According to a statement issued to twitter After the initial delay, it needed additional development time to make it “the best game possible” and an extra month to add “more story, cinematics, and overall polish.” It was confirmed at the D23 Expo that it will be released on December 2nd.

Released at Summer Games Fest 2022, this Darkness Falls cinematic adds Spider-Man to the confirmed roster of Midnight Suns heroes. Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite goopy anti-hero Venom, corrupted by Lilith and possessed by demons, stands alongside Marvel’s collection of her Bruisers (a collection that includes Scarlett’s Witch and Hulk). It looks bad.

What is the story of Midnight Sons? who is the hunter?
In Midnight Suns, humanity is endangered by Lilith, the mother of demons. Lilith, as her name suggests, is an ancient, powerful and malevolent being. Defeated and sealed centuries ago, she is resurrected (surprise) by a hydra and appears to be attempting to summon Chthon, Master of the Old Gods. That’s probably very bad.
In Midnight Suns, on the other hand, you play as the Hunter, the original hero created for the game. You can choose between male and female hunters and customize their appearance. And, incidentally, you are Lilith’s child. They don’t seem to have a warm relationship. You were the one who defeated Lilith in the past. She sealed her away into a centuries-long slumber. And now that Mom is back to try another Apocalypse, you’ve been thawed for a rematch.
What other heroes have been confirmed for Midnight Suns?
As a hunter, you’ll battle alongside 12 established heroes from the Marvel canon. In the comics, the Midnight Sons roster (the original set was more male) is more obscure and occult-themed, with several recognizable names such as Doctor He’s Strange, Ghost He’s Rider, and Blade. They tend to go for heroes who have done it. For Midnight Suns, Firaxis has plenty of Avengers and X-Men. These heroes have been confirmed so far:

What will Marvel’s Midnight Sons gameplay look like?
Creative director Jake Solomon claimed that Midnight Suns would be “very different” from XCOM, but still a Firaxis tactics RPG. However, there are some significant differences from the XCOM model. So Midnight Suns is a card game. Instead of having an action bar with character actions to use on cooldowns, you draw random cards from the decks you build for each hero. These are how the hero attacks or uses its powers for utility his options such as defensive boosts or stealth his buffs. Cover and line of sight aren’t really factors.
Cards use keyword mechanics like those found in Slay the Spire, Hearthstone, or Magic: The Gathering. For example, Wolverine’s Ability Card contains many Taunt Keywords that can be played to draw the attention of enemies. It’s hard to pay attention to anything else when you’re suffering from a tiny whirlwind of nail-biting Canadian violence.
Heroism counters accumulate as you play abilities, and some cards allow you to cash in a certain amount of heroism for additional effects. A single Wolverine card gains the Lifesteal keyword when crossing certain heroism thresholds, healing damage he inflicts.
Unlike XCOM’s grid-based gameplay, characters in Midnight Suns can move freely and target any point within their radius on their turn. No hit rate to worry about. As the developers said in the livestream above, these are literal superheroes. Captain He’s not going to give America a chance he misses 95% of the attack rolls. You don’t even deal with permadeath. For better or worse, Marvel doesn’t allow basic enemies to outright kill Iron Man because you missed your turn.
What can you do between Midnight Suns missions?
Between missions, return to Abbey, the headquarters of the Midnight Sons. You can interact with your teammates and build friendships with dialogue his tree conversations and hangout his sequences. It’s also where you manage and upgrade your hero’s ability card selection. It’s somewhere between XCOM’s base management layer and hanging out with Normandy pals in Mass Effect, with some light exploration. It is thrown.
Being a superhero game, you can choose different costumes for both hunters and pre-existing heroes. It’s unclear if these are just unlockable cosmetics or tied to crafted upgrades. I hope the esoteric decorations on the trailer’s costume are products of the magical alloy that enhanced Iron Man’s armor. Hopefully there will be enough aesthetic options without spending more cash.
