Apple caused a lot of excitement When we announced Dynamic Islands Earlier this month on the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max handsets (but not for everyone).
This feature brings the boring pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display to life by changing its appearance depending on the information or controls being displayed.
No doubt Steve Jobs shook his head in disappointment – and perhaps Apple’s top lawyer on Speed Dial – Dynamic Islands has now landed on Android!
No, it’s not part of the recent updates to Google’s mobile operating system. Rather, a malicious developer introduced it to Android via an app called dynamicSpot that targets the punched cutouts that come with many Android handsets.
The video (below) shared by Jawomo, creator of dynamicSpot, shows an early version of the app in action.
Like Apple’s Dynamic Island, dynamicSpot works as a multitasking tool, giving you quick access to your recent notifications, phone status changes, and more.
Staying on the theme of lifting all of Apple’s Dynamic Island features, you can also tap on the spot to open the app that appears and hold to expand for more details.
Jawomo can’t customize the iPhone’s Dynamic Island, but dynamicSpot teethDescription: “You can change interaction settings, when to show or hide pop-ups, and choose which apps to show.”
The developer adds: “dynamicSpot uses Android’s notification system, so it’s compatible with almost any app, including message notifications, timer apps, and music apps.”
You can also move the location of spots in the app. This is an important feature as not all Android phone makers place the camera cutout in the center of the display.
I don’t know yet if Android users will use dynamicSpot. It can be fun to try, but it’s in the early stages of development, so it can be buggy, so don’t expect the smoothness and richness of Apple’s efforts.
The dynamicSpot app is currently in beta and free to download from Google PlayHowever, you will have to pay $5 for full functionality.
