Chris Hemsworth will return to Netflix next year with Extraction 2, the sequel to the blockbuster action spectacle released in April. In a behind-the-scenes vignette released at his Tudum 2022 Virtual He event on Netflix, Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave talk about how they’re raising the stakes for a sequel.
Hargrave jokes that a sequel should have twice as much action. According to Hargrave, the film’s centerpiece is an ambitious new one-shot involving a helicopter landing on top of a moving train. The vignettes are also narrated by Hemsworth and feature the level of dramatic commentary you’d expect from an actor.
The first extract included another memorable one-shot action sequence that lasted a total of 12 minutes. These sequences require a lot of planning and precise timing, but they were such a hit that Hargrave wanted to outdo themselves this time. The first movie reached 99 million households in his first month and became one of his most popular movies on Netflix. The writer previously said the next film would be “very different” from the first.
Extraction Hemsworth stars as Tyler Lake, a mercenary with a knack for extracting kidnap victims. In his Extraction review for GameSpot, Dan Auty praised the action sequences but said the story was clichƩd.
“With its comfortable formula and gorgeous action sequences, ‘Extraction’ is another well-known Netflix movie, but in the end it’s an average Netflix movie, with more big-name stars than overall quality.” attention (see also recent 6 Underground and Spencer Confidential),ā wrote Auty. “But with zero theatrical competition from better films, it should satisfy those looking for glossy thrills. It’s not in the same league as the best John Wick or Jason Bourne movies.” Maybe, but for now, it’s as close as we’re going to get to an all-new action blockbuster.”
