I wish I could forget one of the routes.
Idea Factory’s Otomate brand has two cash cow franchises: the Hakuouki series, set in the Meiji Restoration, and the Amnesia series, set in modern times. I hate to put up with amnesia as a narrative trope (especially in Japanese media), but I started playing romance games for the first time in Hakuouki, so I’m not sure how other games are holding up 10 years later. Mostly still solid today, but definitely showing its age, the game has courtships that have a rough combination of being in bad shape back then and aging like milk There is one person
Amnesia: Memories kicks off perfectly in August of an unnamed year in an unnamed Japanese city as big as two universities. The unnamed protagonist – with no default options as with most other releases – wakes up on August 1 with a spirit named Orion forcibly replacing his memories for no reason. The dialogue is where route selection takes place, first with four suitors represented by traditional card suits (the club route is alternatively called the “clover” route). Suitors reach their good ends.
The suitor is a traditional archetype, but with a little twist. There’s a childhood best friend who can’t confess his love, a brother who may be overprotective, a womanizer who literally falls in love at first sight and is flocked to by girls he likes, and a super-intelligent older student who doesn’t. I don’t understand love The Joker has the most fantastical storyline, and while some routes might come across as a stalker, their route was definitely the least spooky. , is a good ending that involves admitting love to someone who literally drugged the protagonist and locked her in a cage for sick protection for over a week… although I was hoping it would end with a kick to the groin , it never came… nice touch.Apart from the good ending of the diamond route, some of the bad endings have images as offensive as the North American T rating will allow. No sexual content other than kissing However, depending on the protagonist and the route, at least two suitors work in a café that employs a “maid” and a “butler.”At least they have equal opportunities?
The Switch version isn’t the first time Amnesia has been localized (it was released on Vita in August 2015), so I had plenty of time to fix the text. I had one incident where I had to go to the log to see the end of the sentence because a textbox that should have been 4 lines was his 3 lines, but only that and a few repeated words made me pull out a metaphorical red pen for editing.
Amnesia’s environments are mostly urban, but the characters are well-designed, with a variety of backgrounds and environments outside of the essential locations (hero’s house, cafe). The Japanese voice acting is good, but using voices from the dubbed anime was over budget and I suspect they would have needed to be recast since they weren’t even in the Vita version. Christopher Ayers in the dub). The music wasn’t very prominent or memorable, usually ending with an episode of connectivity in the background.
I can see why Amnesia: Memories was a breakout hit for developers. It included many more quality-of-life little items that I took for granted in later works, so if you’re into romance games, this is a great starting point.
