The reindeer are out in the yard and it’s no secret that Skábma – Snowfall is coming to PS4 and PS5 soon, so we’d like to take this opportunity to explain what our game really is. .
What is Sukabuma?
Skábma – Snowfall is an adventure game set in the fictional Samiland and inspired by the indigenous Sami culture. Stories combine fact and fiction to dive right into the heart of the culture. It presents old (and sometimes current) beliefs, customs and stories.
Everything in the game is about the Sami.
What is Sami?
Now that I know that not everyone in the world knows about the Sami, I’ll give you a brief explanation.
We are a very small indigenous people scattered across Scandinavia, Finland and northern Russia. There are about 100,000 Sami people, divided into several different groups and languages.
All languages are considered highly endangered.
We are primarily known for our reindeer herder culture, but there is much more that we can tell you. But there is only so much space in this article. If you’re interested, dig deeper and learn more about Sami culture.
Sukabuma’s Tale – Snowfall
Skábma tells the story of Áilu, a young reindeer herder whose normal reindeer guard duties turned into a mission to save his homeland after a strange disease began to spread in the area. While chasing a runaway reindeer, Áilu comes across an old Noaidy his drum.
This is the starting point of Áilu’s journey to become a Sámi seer and healer, the first noaidi in a century. All Áilu has to do now is learn how to play the drums. Easy, right?
Skábma – Snowfall Gameplay
Mastering such a powerful tool as the noiday drum is not easy. Luckily, Drum helps his Áilu reconnect with his four familiars to help.
Owl gives Áilu the ability to dash and turn bleeders (infected objects and enemies) into air vortexes, greatly speeding up movement. Bears give you the power of the earth, allowing Aisle to brave high winds, build rock platforms, and smash blood-infested obstacles. Trout grants healing and shielding powers. And finally, agile foxes lend us the ability to jump higher and set breeders on fire.
Acquiring new powers and exploring locations are the main mechanics of the game. There are many items and secrets in the game world. Collectibles reveal vast amounts of information about Sami culture and unlock conversations you don’t want to miss.
Players are encouraged to get lost in the woods as they never know what they will find.
I’ve been arguing all day about how awesome it was to have the world’s first PlayStation game voiced in Northern Sami. Players from all over the world can get to know our unique culture. And how cool it would be for players to actually dive into something fresh and new that hasn’t been presented in the game yet.
So let’s go back to the beginning of this blog and answer your question. What is the real purpose of our game? It’s about interacting with reindeer!
Why do you think all players should pet reindeer? Reindeer are without a doubt the most important animal to the Sami people…but the main reason is You can do it and feel warm and fuzzy inside of you.*
I look forward to petting my horned friend. Sukabuma – Snowfall will launch on PS5 and PS4 next year.
Disclaimer: Don’t try to pet a reindeer in the real world. Reindeer have sharp horns. Luckily, you can do that in the game Skábma instead.
