The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest is described as a metroidvania-lite. It features all the staples of a typical metroidvania with a sprawling map, upgradeable weapons, and tough boss fights. The “lite” implies a shorter adventure than most. And in the end, that’s exactly what you have: a quirky, simple adventure that’s fun while it lasts. The Prisoning is a creative experience. The whole thing begins with a short scene involving a game developer, Fletcher, talking to some sort of psychologist. It seems Fletcher is suffering from anxiety, so his inept counselor suggests a deep sleep to help him face his demons.…

Airborne Kingdom was one of the early pioneers of what I’ve dubbed the “weird city builder” trend, one that takes the genre out of its realistic, SimCity-esque roots and plonks it on the back of a dinosaur or in a world populated by beavers. In Airborne Kingdom’s case, the gimmick was building a flying city, and it executed that well enough to receive a score of 80% in our Airborne Kingdom review.I’d lost track of what developer The Wandering Band had been up to since, because Steam’s torrent of new games never ceases. But it turns out what it’s been…

While there are no shortage of Metroidvanias flooding the PS Store these days, Castlevania’s side-scrolling era is a well that remains largely untapped. Saint Slayer: Spear of Sacrilege unashamedly draws inspiration from Konami’s 1987 NES classic, delivering a mostly delightful action platformer with fun combat and some surprisingly smart set-pieces. Set in 1698, you assume the role of hatted hero Rudiger, an agricultural everyman who gets drawn into a wider, somewhat political plot, involving a power-hungy priest named Father Pacer. The writing is sharp and amusing at points, and it gives momentum to the star of the show here, which…
