Avowed targeting 30fps on Xbox Series X|S
Speaking on the Iron Lords Podcast, Obsidian developers were asked about Avowed’s console performance and the game’s framerate on Xbox Series X, to which Hansen revealed that Obsidian’s core target for Avowed on console is 30fps.
“Performance is one of the last things we figure out, right?” Hansen said. “Our core target is 30 frames per second, bare minimum — that’s the expectation. It’s a first-person, single-player game. You don’t necessarily need that 60 frames, and that allows us to get a lot juicier with the effects, lighting, and all this other stuff.
“It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with that. I mean, the game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal, but as far as a greater understanding of performance spec, we’re still figuring all of that out. It’s one of the last things you do.”
While the 30fps target will be disappointing for some, hopefully, Obsidian is considering adding a 60fps performance mode to Avowed after launch. Several months after launch, Bethesda updated Starfield with a 60fps mode, and Arkane also did the same with Redfall.
Earlier this month, Obsidian delayed the RPG into next year. Avowed launches on February 18, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
