Apex Legends, an online free-to-play battle royale, has been around since 2019 and only released on Switch in 2021, but the general aim is to keep the franchise alive for a very long time.
In an interview with friends on GamesIndustry.biz, the game’s director, Steven Ferreira, mentioned how the team has been working “long term”, aiming to keep the IP alive for perhaps 15+ years. bottom.
“We believe Apex is a franchise that will last 10, 15, or more years, and we’re excited to make it happen. We’re not ready to do that long-term.”
Ferreira notes that the game is now in its 16th season. The studio is now delivering certain content that it has “long held” until the game reaches a certain level of quality and meets the needs indicated by player feedback.
To ease some of the pressure, Respawn is also opening a third studio in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. His immediate purpose is to support his Apex Legends live service, but he may be assigned to other of his Respawn projects in the future. The studio will be led by Ryan Burnett, formerly director of engine production at Epic Games. He also worked on his Call of Duty series for 14 years at Raven Software.
Apex Legends has grossed over $2 billion to date. In a recent update, EA is also believed to have discontinued single player projects set within the same universe.
